Suggestion of finding replacement 17x8 +48 SSR Type-C (Competition rim)

Hi,

One of my SSRs showed up with a nice ding in the rim -- and it's time to either fix it or get a new one.

I called Tire Rack, and the "most helpful" NOT sales folk tried to sell me an all-black one in 17x8 +48.

I would either fix or replace the wheel, and if you guys have any suggestions on where I can get a single "17 x 8.0 +48 SSR Competition that has the anthracite with machined lip (spokes are anthracite, rim is a nice silver color).

Here is a link to the TireRack page that has the picture of the wheel that looks exactly like my current SSR Comp wheels:

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...e+w%2FMach+Lip

here is the picture of my wheel (presumably in size other that 17x8”)

The picture above is for a size that Tire Rack claims is NO longer made in my size. I even offered them incentive $$$ to special order (if possible). I had a couple of guys try to send me the wrong colors (All black, silver, etc).

here is the picture of the wheel they wanted to send me:

I'm wondering if any of you guys have bought have any suggestions on:

a) Finding a reliable seller of 1 or more of the wheels.
b) Finding a reliable company that could fix a 1/8" bend in the rim (I don't know how this would go with a semi-solid forged wheel).
c) Finding a size that IS available from Tire Rack in wrong finish, and send it out to be painted/cleared/whatever. I would need the name of someone who can match the all black or all anthracite to my rims (anthracite only on spokes and inner rim).

Thanks in advance...

Just go to a reliable wheel repair shop and you should be fine.

I got my 18" SSR Competition fixed after It had a bend on the lip and apparently 2 other places, it cost $330 but like you said, these are discontinued.

I heard of a Place in PA that does amazing work that you can ship it out to.

Did they tell you what they did to repair the wheels?

I presume that you are still driving on the repaired wheel and it's OK? (yes/no?)

What was the name of the shop that fixed your SSR Comp?

If you remember -- at some point in the future -- the name of the shop in PA that does "amazing work", could you give me the info?

OR... if you -- or others -- have a name of a good shop in Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley that does quality work (I am ready and willing to pay top dollar for top-quality work).

Thanks!

tire rack is the only seller of these rims. They don't have the anthracite ones any longer. They also only have a limited supply of the black ones.

If you want to dump all 4 let me know. I've been looking for them.

I've seen them crop up on Ebay a few times in the last year. That's been it.

since SSR had financial issues their production slowed down a lot, it actually stopped, but someone picked it up a year ago and started to push out more rims.

They claim that they have the anthracite in my size, but I'm a bit untrusting after having three different guys try and send me something that wasn't a match -- as claimed.

Also, I called Gruppe-s, and they said the lip is different (not just the color). One of the saleguys claimed that the lip was different (stepped vs. curved) and could get the anthracite in 17x8 +49 (still means 4-wheel purchase) HOWEVER, I'm still waiting for a quote via e-mail, so I'm not sure who's got the straight dope on what's really changed and what hasn't changed.

So, do you really want alll four, even though one has a mild case of curb rash and slightly bent rim (other three are perfect)? (The curb rash was a result of a near-death experience with a itsy-bitsy gal in a HUGE SUV talking on the cell-phone during her up-on-two-wheels-left let’s-kill-Eric left turn).

If I can't get the one fixed or replaced, then I'll definitely be talking to you!

Hmmm, he's a smart guy to have snapped them up. Yep, we talked back in 2001 about the wheels before we BOTH purchased them so I know he had them. Drop me a PM

If you have a last contact for him, please let me know.

I'm OK.

How are you doing?

Do you personally know anyone that has used them?

I've found a few listings for wheel repairs in the area, but have had some trouble finding mechanics and other folks that have actually used their services for forged wheels.

And, thanks for more resources.
