speed ratings for cl's tires

just a quick question..

i have a 2001 3.2 cl and was in an accident a few weeks ago. during the accident, both of my front tires were blown. so i decided to get all 4 tires replaced since rear were worn out also. problem is that i asked the mechanic specifically to get Yokohama AVID V4S with VR speed rating. i just called him and he said he couldn't get the tires with VR speed rating so he got the tires with HR speed rating. so my question is that does it make alot of difference between HR and VR rated tires? i don't think i'll go over 130 mph again but i'm alittle wary about getting tires with lower ratings that oem tires.

It should be perfectly fine. The load index appears to be more important, I had a set of tires with a lower load index and I went through them a lot sooner than tires with a proper load index.

Yokohama only makes the Avid V4s in the size 215/50 R17 - it has the V-speed rating, and a 93 load rating.
The Yokohama Avid H4s comes in the oversize 235/45 R17 - it has the H speed rating, and a 97 load rating.

This link tells you what the speed and load ratings mean -

you should never put lower speed rated tires on a car, and as a policy, most shops will not do it. tires are matched up from the manufacturer based on the cars handling, power etc...you won't have the same grip while breaking, you will break the tires loose easier.....and if there is still a warranty(doubt it on a 01) it can/will be void. not to mention that if you try to trade it in they could make you purchase the correct tires. and in an extreme case, if there is an accident or something, and it gets brought up that you inadequate(sp) tires on there, you could have problems.
tires are the only safety feature touching the ground, don't go the inadequate route.

Don't feel bad dude, I do it too. Sometimes I'm so bad about it, I never even make the damn purchase.
