painting stock wheels gunmetal
I don't have much experience in refinishing alloy wheels. I bought some new oem 17"s for my S without tires. I already found information on how to paint them but the only question I have is if I paint them without tires, will the paint come off around the edges while the tires are being installed???

Huge difference. Again I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure they powdercoat.

Are we being somewhat picky? I am just aswering his question as he asked it. Bottom line it really does not matter, he just want to know if the paint or coat is going to come off and it comes down to the tech putting the tire on.

The wheels are actually the 01 S wheels, the prior owner of my vehicle obviously needed to take some courses on how to park without making contact with the sidewalk. Consequently, I bear the burden of having to hide those scratches, so smoking them out was the idea I came up with to hide them. Besides, I think it will look mean since my car is Black. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Hey classycls, are those yours? cuz if they are, what method did you use to smoke them, powdercoating, or spray paint. If it was paint, did you use the duplicolor brand graphite color, or something else? Does anyone know how powdercoating works or how it is applied, I never really heard of it before, is it more durable than traditional wheel paint and how expensive is it?

the local acura dealer did a bang-up job installing tires for me recently. that is, they really banged up my stock '01 cl type s wheels. it looks like one was dropped face down and all of the spokes were pitted where they extend farthest out.
they tried to repair them and for the two really badly damaged ones the repair company painted them silver (so they would look original). they actually looked pretty good and it was not at all obvious that they were painted. if i had done the damage myself i would have been satisfied with the repair job.
so i expect that painting the wheels a dark color would look fine.
(the story has a happy ending: the dealership got me 4 brand-new wheels).
