OEM Tires F'in Suck

Hit a Crater Sized PotHole. And I have 2 Sumitomo HTR+ and 2 OEM. The OEM on the Front.

Well the OEM's Blew Out like nothing and the Sumitomo's held up fine.

Gonna go but ALL 4 of Continental ContiExtremeContact seem like they are rated well on TireRack but could be biased.

What do you think of the Continental ContiExtremeContact ????

I have the conti's and they are great for the price.

Much better in all conditions, Only Inflate them to around 38psi not the 35 that most tire places will inflate them to.

Nice tire choice...however saying they're bad because they blew out it wrong. First off...the front wheels hit at completly different angles than the rear...not to mention they support much more weight than the rears. And it also depends on exactly how much air you had in the tires and what the condition of the tread is. At work...we rarely see blown out Michelins...we get bubbles all day long but almost never see blow-outs. And I work in NY...and it's the winter time.

Stockers suck, I agree. I also agree with what Ant is saying. I need some new treads myself.

Ohh yeah...definitly stock tires suck for handling and traction reasons....but seem to hold pretty well in pot-holes from my experience.

I've had the Sumi's on the front before and hit potholes and they held up fine, but the Michelins were only 2 months old, just rotated them to the front, excellent tread left, and I check tire pressure on each gas fill and were at the 32psi. +- .5psi

Strange...prolly just the size or shape of the pot-hole. Like I said...I rarely see blow-outs.

I just replaced all four of mine...used them to the last minute..hehe..
I went ahead and got some Yoko YK420's. I didnt want to spend too much since I'm going to be getting some 18's and would have to get new tires anyways.

I have blown out 2 Sumos in the last 2 months - both on the front of the car. I also egged the sidewall of the original pilots, but at least the tire didn't blow. I got 55k out of the pilots and the sumo that just blew only had 15k and was very worn.

I replaced my latest blowout with BF Goodrich Traction TA. 60,000 mile tread warranty and road hazard warranty.

IMHO, the sumo's suck, but they are on sale at tirerack for $76 bucks right now.

Just replaced the shitty stock Michelins with bridgestone turanza V's. Already a huge difference. Drove straight up a hill covered with snow. Would have just slipped in my place with the stocks. Also much quieter and smoother ride. Handling is great too. Best decision I ever made. One question for whoever might answer: I got 225/50/17s. What would the optimal tire pressure be?

While the stock tires are not my favorites, there is something you should consider:

The front of the car has over 60% of the weight on it. Since the tires carry that weight, they get the brunt of the force. And, if you brake in anticipation of a pothole, you add even more weight to the front of the car and unload even more weight from the rear of the car.

The Survey/Ratings are well worth looking into on Tire Rack. However, with time, SOME of top-ranked tires (#1, #2s) have slipped to much lower positions over the course of a year.

Here is the Tire Rack test link:
