NEW Tires

I need to purchase NEW tires all the way around... I currently have Toyo FZ4's in 225/40/18. I know that there are alot of different tires out there and have seen many of you use different brands.

Can you tell me what you prefer(Brand) or what you have and why you chose it? Also what you paid for tires you purchased? Also please not only include the BRAND but also the MODEL.

I looked for a similar thread to answer my questions but could not find one.

Don't want to go REALLY cheap or REALLY expensive. Would like to keep the price per tire under $250, but not totally ruling out tires in the $150 range.

Trying to make a decision within the next few days.

Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

If that's your price range go with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S.

I went with Dunlop SP Sport 5000 because it was best tire they had in stock and I needed them badly as I had a couple flats. I paid around $180 ea. including mounting/balancing and free rotation every 6k miles.

I'm currently using Yokohama ES 100 tires. I bought them through discount tire for $127 a piece (which included mounting, balancing for the life of the tires). I bought these tires because I've heard good things about them on this site. So far I like them. They're so much better than the stock tires. I really don't know how they would compare to your Toyo FZ4's. You can check out the specs here: http://www.yokohamatire.com/pdf/avses100.pdf
They have your size 225/40/18 but the load rating is only 88 and our cars are supposed to use tires which are rated at 93. I currently have 91 which is fine but I wouldn't go any lower than that.

Jim,

If Glenn were here, he would tell you Toyo T1S. Do you want to go away from Toyo? Seems like you run pretty hard and successfully on them.

Pimp,

I would also consider going to a 235/40/18 with your new set. That is THE closest size to stock height (keeps speedo correct). Lots of people have 225's, maybe because there more common and therefore get better deals, but they just a little to short.

Diameter / Circumferance / Revolutions per Mile

Stock:
215/50/17 - 25.5 - 80.0 - 792

235/40/18 - 25.4 - 79.8 - 794

225/40/18 - 25.1 - 78.8 - 804

Just my

So i guess 225/45/18 are out of the question then as far as coming close to stock?

In my opinion, yes, 225/45/18 are too tall at Dia: 26.0 Cir: 81.6 Rev: 777

But don't get me wrong, I'm just picky over details, all of these sizes are in a general enough area to work ok, the numbers just suggest that the best 18" tire size for our car is a 235/40/18.

Well the reason i would consider 225/45/18 is that there will be a little more sidewall so rims wouldnt get bent "as easy" and the ride might be a taaaad bit more smooth. And if im reading it correctly, the 225/45/18 will give out less revolutions per mile in turn less mileage will be recorded (I know not a significant amount by any means) just cool thought though!

need more tire advice

I am buying new tires to replace the OE Michelin MX4X 215/50 R17 93V on my 2001 CL Type S. They have held up well for over 50000 miles and still legal depth. I want something quieter and better in icing /slush and will give up some top end performance. I live in the wet Northwest and go over the mountain passes alot. I am considering All-Season tires like Toyo Proxes TPT, Mich Energy MXV4 S8 and Falkin Ziex. The Falcon is top rated by Consumer reports and cost half as much as the Michelin and Proxes. The MXV4 S8 is a great tire for my goals but is 1.5 inches bigger in diameter and will throw off the speedo. What do you guys recommend if balls out performance is not your first priority. Yes, I know when I bought the Type S it was a fast performance car but now I would like something a little quieter and better icy traction. Thanks for any advice.

Recommend Yokohama Avid V4's, they match the 93 load rating needed, they are all season tires with good performance. THese tires have yet to be tested in the snow or ice from any members here as far as a I know. On Tirerack they are 104 a piece i believe.

hey dickz,

I did a small comparo of all-season and dedicated snows over on the TL tire section forum (2nd gen). Here's a link to it:

2nd gen TL all-season / dedicated snow tire comparo

Hope that helps.

BTW, I do have a preference for Toyo Proxies4 in 235/40/18 ... Have driven about 10000km on them (6000miles) and so far, only good things to say of them. Paid about US$160/tire.

Derrick, Thanks for the great thread, good info. The Proxes TPT are sold by Les Schwab up here in the Pacific NW. $182/tire for 215/50VR17. 65000 mile warranty. I think they'll be as good if not better than the OEM Michelins although Consumer Reports didn't think so. I have had Toyo tires on previous cars and always had good experience with them. Will also check into Nokian if they have them here. Will report back on whatever tires I get because a lot of guys are asking the same questions about what's the best tire for certain conditions.

Another question. In researching this problem I found I can buy a set of good looking polished 16 inch wheels and Michelin X-Ice tires for only about $100 more than the 17 inch OEM tire alone replacements. Since my OEM MXM4 tires are still good for 2-3 years at the rate I drive(I was only worried about snow traction on my current tires, not tread life), I'm thinking of getting a set of winter dedicated tires and wheels. The question is: will 16 inch wheels that fit the CL P fit the CL S Type S hubs, IE same bolt pattern, etc. Dealers are closed today so I couldn't call them for advice. Thanks for any input.

many members with CL Type S' use CL-P wheels and some even use the TL-P wheels for winter set-ups..

Thanks, that's great. I think the best all around solution to this winter/summer driving is to get two sets of wheels/tires. May be more expensive at first but over the life of the car it is a cheap price to pay for safety in the snow (mountain passes) and still have good touring performance in better weather. I was going to shell out the cash for OEM replacements anyway but now I'll just get a winter setup instead and then 2-3 years down the road get the performance replacement tires only. It won't feel too bad to the pocketbook. By the way, can you also install cables on the 16 inch CL P setup?

Winters on 03-CL-S S6

Any advice on winter tire size have new 16" mags and am looking at 225/55/16 or 215/55/19
I need good traction in snow for going skiing but about 50% will be on bare roads so would like the car to handle not to bad ,I am not to inpressed with the car on the highway with the stock tires and read that some one said that Honda made a change to size of tires on the 04 TL to 235/45/17 to inprove the handling of the car .
Any body try this size and if so did it make this car handle any better at speed
