Difference between 17" and 18" rims

What is the ride and handling difference when going to an 18" rim?
Is the ride more harsh? How is handling better? I'm looking at a lightweight 18" so it weighs less than the stock 17"s I have on now.

I had 18's at one time. The ride wasn't too bad. I have 17's now. For the reasons that 17" tires are chaper, & I have some more rim protection with the 45 series tire then the 40 you need for 18's.
