I'm about to slap a new set of rubbers on the stock rims...well sorta...I upgraded my CLP to the CLS rims just because they're the best 17" rims around for the CLS but anyway, I'm looking at both the BFG G-FORCE T/A KDW and the Michelin Pilot Sport but I'm drawn to the Toyo Proxes...any suggestions? I need wet traction and handling more than I need tread life...but I want to corner on a dime too. Right now I'm on a set of (don't laugh) Nitto 450s...they suck ...lasted about 5 months

If you really want the best handling and highest level of grip, The Bridgestone S-03 Pole Postions are by far the best street tire that I have driven. They just keep hanging on

DON"T BUY Z RATED TIRES! They get ripped apart too quickly, they are soft for gripping. If you put alot of miles on your car, your tires are going to be bald soon.

Also do your homework, pirrelli's give you a 15-20k mile warranty!?? Our car's tires(tl-s) are V-rated for 50k(maybe) they suck in grip in the wet but last. I just picked up Dunlop Sport SP 5000's still v rated and seem better than the michelins. Talk to people at tirerack.com and find out more than we tell you.

Most Performance tires do not have a tread warranty. Wear does depend on the compound of the tire, but the indicator of wear is the Treadwear rating stamped on the sidewall. There are differences in wear between different performance tires in the same speed category.

Another good choice is the Pilot Sport A/S, which is supposedly pretty good. It has a 400 treadwear rating, as opposed to the 220 of the Pilot Sport. Better wear than the stock tires. Meaning that it should last more than 1.5x as long as the Pilot Sport. and 25% longer than stocks.

thank you FABVSIX, you provided a lot of information.... in the future, if I start any thread I would want you to offer suggestions as intuitiveand intellectual as the last post.

I merely gave a suggestion, some younger members don't know that Z speed ratings tend to offer less tread life, they just are under the impression that they are "the best" and for practical driving cars, z-ratings are not necessary. Just trying to offer another angle.

S03 Positives:

Great cornering
Good feel
Good wet weather traction (while moving)
Quiet and free of road noise

S03 Negatives:

Cant launch more then 1/2 throttle or I sit still making mosquito killing smoke
Cant launch at all when wet or damp.. dont move and walk sideways like a lobster
Dont even try driving with them on snow or slush unless you have a death wish
On the 2->1 downshift they roast and squeal
At 50 MPH I can break them loose ....


The tires are 6 Weeks old and have almost 2K miles on them... not good indications.. I have just ordered a set of RE730's to try which will be in on wednesday....

S03's and T1-S Proxes are basically the same tire really... Same comments as above for the T1-S proxes... the Toyo are a slightly more aggressive tread pattern (Basically the wet weather Formula1 tire tread) whereas the S03 are a hybrid between street tires and Formula1. Which you buy is personal taste, I'd buy whichever you can get a better deal on... Oh, I think the Toyo has a higher sidewall strength rating for heavy loads... EricL would know for sure...

DUnlop SP 5000 sport = 330 (mine) V rated

Not at all a flame post.... as you can see I bought mine for miles with less emphasis on performance(I do an average of 100 miles a day and never exceed 120 mph so i don't need huge speed ratings!!!!)

You're going to get so many opinions here you won't be able to decipher them. Go to a quality tire store and tell them what you want and listen to their suggestions. All tires have government ratings, check them out. They will give you traction and temperature ratings as well as a treadwear grade.

The first year I had my CL_S the stock tires were fine. Held good enough in rain, and not bad in snow.
They are now at about 15,000 miles, still plenty of tread left, but I don't like them anymore. They slip a bit in the rain, slid all over in the snow (good thing for vsa), and I just sit and spin when I launch hard.

Now I just have to find a good set of all-seasons that will fit on the stock rims and also keep the spedo fairly close to stock.
Was looking at the dunlop 5000, but I think the load rating may be too low in the 235 size (rated 93 at 51 lbs)
Maybe the Mich Pilot AS in 235/45 or 225/50. Don't know yet, its hard to match our stock 818 revs.

The Toyos are awesome. Great in the dry, spectacular in the rain.
Hammerman and i were doing 95 in the wet on Saturday and they felt glued. By the way, he was shooting up a ton of water, they really funnel the water out. Tread pattern is great, pretty long lasting and mine were $160 a piece.

I drive a TL-s, so they are the stock TL-s size which is 215/50/17, I am pretty sure tire rack has them in CL-s size also.

Guys I appreciate all the opinions, but I've got something funny for you. I called Tires.com and the guy I talked to (I think his name was Brad or Brandon) and he suggested (are you ready for this )that I stick with the stock MXV4's! a tire I haven't had on my car since I had the stock CLP rims on there! He wouldn't even comprehend that I had replaced the stock rims!

Here's why I need something with better handling but not 8 million million mph speed rating:

I general hit about 90-95 twice a day, stick at it for about 10 miles, both to and from work, on 400 in Atlanta. My entire commute is on highways (shocker).

It rains about once every two weeks down here.

I don't "street race" my CL, I attempt to keep up with the flow of traffic. (70 is considered stupid slow on atl highways)

I want an aggressive tread pattern/directional tread pattern that will aid in flinging water all over the car behind me (ie, great wet traction) and I don't mind if they only last about 6 months.

It looks like it's either going to be the Toyo or the BFG. (only reason I'm choosing BFG is because I've had BFG all terrains on my 4runner for 6 years)

I don't know a damn thing about cooper tires.

TOyo Proxes came moderately recommended by my friend with a Prelude.... he likes them in the summer?!?! complained about their grip in the wet under aggressive driving (turning etc.) that is about all he had to offer.

I may be selling 4 - PolePosition S03's with <2000 miles on them .. basically brand new... if anyone is interested ill dump them for 500

All 235/45/17 tires require/recommend/measure an 8 inch rim.

But, many people here run them on the stock 7 with no problems.

The only issue I've heard is an alignment can be difficult with the 235.

I'm leaning towards the SP5000 235/24/17.

I've got the S-03's on Oem rims and 4000 miles later, NO issues what's so ever, Now I don't put 4 500 pound folks in my car and go racing across the desert at 125 mph either.......that's is where it is questionable !

BTW......I think these tires are amazing !
