38 offset

Hey guys, I know that the offset on the 01 CL-S is a 42. Has anyone put a 38 offset wheel on their car and if so, did it rub? If I rolled my fenders would I be all set? I'm only 4mm's off. Thats not a whole lot of space, but enough. Let me know what's up. Thanks.

The OEM offset for the CLS 17x7 rims is +55. The +42 offset has been considered by most the absolute minimum. I have a CT drop and running with 235/40ZR18s tires and 18x7.5 rims with a +42 offset (a result of 6mm wheel spacers with a +48 rim offset for the BBK). I have no rubbing issues. However, there isn't much room left between the tires and fender. A +38 offset would probably cause rubbing issues for me.

Also, why are you considering a +38 offset when most rims are available in hight offsets? Just curious.

yeah, the highest offset in the wheels that I am getting are a 38 offset. I can roll and pull and the fenders to make it work. Also I am going with 20x8.5 38 with the Nitto 225-35-20 tires.

Wow... I haven't heard of anyone running with 20s on a CLS before. I think if you went with 20x7.5 with the 225/35/20s it might fit without the need to mess with the fenders. But the 20x8.5 rims will be tight. But I'm no expert. How much of a drop do you have?

It's fine if you don't want to make any turns.

Turning is for suckers anyway

Don't have the cl-s dropped. Don't plan on it right now. I actually had 20x8.5 but with a 20 offset on it for about a week for a show, but those came off. Now we (I work for Davin Wheels), are putting on a different set with the closet offset we can to 42. Even when I had the other wheels on with the wrong offset, I could turn. So I know 20's fit and turning radius isn't cut down that much. It's for looks, not to race with, obviously.

Let's do a little comparison for the nonbeliever...

Stock: 17x7 +55
Proposed: 20x8.5 +38

The clearance from stut housing to the inside of the wheel will be 2mm LESS
The outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 36mm

36mm = 1.417

simply 2 letters NO

i tried to put 38 offset on CLS before with H&R sport springs. I was rubbing like there is no tomorrow. i rubbed every 2 secs on a perfectly flat smooth road, imagine how bad it would be on the freeway.

yeah,

i have a +35 offse now, and i cant lower the car much at all....

its riding a bit lower than stock i think, but i was bummed when i realized the rims were +35s.

i am trying to get a set of +45s as soon as possible...

I dont think you can drop well inless you have a nice tight offset as many of the folks on the site have been saying...

best of luck...

kumar

I just bought my car And I want to put a set of wheel I think 19's will look tacky I would like to do 20's But not sure how this whole offset thing goes. I've heard that You can do 20's but they would be 20x7.5 I want something a little wider look but I hear that you can't also 20x7.5 there is not that big of a selection???

do 19s.... trust me, 19s are the max you wanna go... i have seen some with 20s on this site and they look way too big for the car...

the 19s seems to fit a bit better and dont look too too extreme...

besides, pothole city over there in dirty jersey anyways...

hey i bought the toyo proxes 4s and they have protected my tires from michigan roads thus far.

i think the tire plays a big role in the protection of the rim....

something to think about...

i love my 19s, so think about it and stay clear of some of them big ass pot holes...

holla,

kumar
