20 inch wheels?

Well, I posted a topic about myself considering purchasing some 19x8.5 +45 wheels, and a few of you responded with some disappointing results. I have since asked around locally, and many of the answers I have gotten, they all say that size of wheel should fit, without any major problems.

Now, with that in mind, a good friend of mine had a 02 CL Type-S, and he had 20x8.5's with a +38 offset on his car. His car was also lowered and his wheels sat perfectly flush with his fender. I have seen this car for all of you doubters. The wheel style he had was a 20 inch Hipnotic Blur.

So I'm thinking, because this wheel fit on his car, why would I have problems with a smaller diameter wheel with a higher offset???

Yeah, I'm positive, I even looked up his wheels on Hipnotics website, or some wheel website and they only had that offset available.

I'd check with your friend.
I'm skeptical you could run a wheel that big with an offset that low.

and either way, i get the impression those rims would look pretty fugly on a cl.

On my setup, Eibachs, 20*7.5 43et. The rear wheels barely clear the fender and I'm running 1.9 degrees of camber in the rear. It rub-a-dub-dubs with anything over 130lbs plus me in the car going over dips and what not.

Well, here's my dilemma. I either want to do a 19x8.5 with a +45 offset, or 19x8 with a +43 offset? I do want to lower my car, and still have a smooth ride. I've read that most people are happy with the Tien S-Tech springs, but I've heard the H-Tech springs are just as good, but don't lower your car as much as the S-Tech's do?

I think 19X8.5 +45 offset would rub a little too especially with a drop. I think 19x8 +45 is the best thing u could run on there. I have 19x8 +43 and I rub a little, but I am slammed on coilovers.

No offence Greggie, but you need to forget about those wheels. There is NO way that the ONLY 2 or 3 wheels you can get are offsets that WILL NOT likely fit on the CLs. There are hundreds of wheels out there, get one that will fit.

I promise you that you will rub badly with both of those setups. I wouldn't run a wheel wider than 7.5" with an offset lower then 42. Even then you will likely rub from time to time.

Find a wheel that fits properly.

19x8.5 with a 45 offset with an H&R Sport drop fits fine with no rubbing Kahrupt had that on his old setup

What's with this fascination with 20's? I never got it? A big sedan... that looks good, but on a small car it looks like ass! The rims are expensive, the tires are expensive, the ride is harsh, & the rims tend to bend in a big size like that cause you have a paper cup tire around it.

Well, I agree totaly, I think 20 inch wheels on a front wheel drive car is stupid. I mean, I'd prefer 19's, and yes, I'm very picky. I get my mind set on a particular style, and can't get my mind off it, lol. I will get some pics of his car as soon as he sends them to me. So, well, ok, I dunno, with trimming of the fenders/spring perches, or whatever, I'd like to do the 8.5 wide wheel. So, lemme me get this,

19x8.5 +45 = no-go, definately will rub

19x8 +43?? Anyway these would work?

^ both lowered with TIEN H-Techs with a 225/35/R19 tire???
OR

18x8 +45 with a 215/40/R18???

^ Lowered with TIEN S-Techs??

I'm sorry to keep bugging you guys with this, I'm just looking for a certain look, and again, I am picky, lol

Oh, and I don't ever plan on slamming my car, or buying coil-overs, just new struts/shocks and springs. Now, where would I run into the rubbing issue? On the inside, or at the fender? Would a camber kit or wheel spacers work for me?

Woudln' twheel spacers work to push the wheels even farther out past the fenders?

I have a 7.5 +45 wheel with 235/35/19 tires and do not tuck.

We got a new 20" x 8.5" wheel coming out with a 52mm offset and a 3" lip. The Legedn Type II, pics coming soon, this is just an un-offical preview, the face will be flatter than that:

Not to be rude but... That tire stretch is hideous too, sorry. 20's have no business on a CL IMHO.

Ok, there ya go, and sorry for the pics being large in size, but again, those are 20x8.5 inch Hipnotic Blur wheels, with a +38 offset, and the car is also lowered with TIEN S-Techs....

Now, since I want a 19x8.5 +45 wheel, how come these work, and some people on here tell me the wheels I want won't work???

Oh yeah I totally agree, those wheels do look extremely hideous on that car!!!! And I would never put a 20-inch wheel on a FWD car either... I was just wanting wheel size opinions, and what will and won't work, since obviously this is different?!?

That tire is stretched to hell and back to fit that application. I looks rediculous. Poor, CL. In one pic, you can clearly see that the lip of the wheel is right at the edge of the fender. It's a very poor fitment choice. Do some searching on fitment around here and stick with a proper application or go with an RJ wheel if you want to go wider. I'd NEVER go lower than a +42 on a 7.5" wheel if I were you. The only time I might consider it is if the wheel was only a 17" and I wasn't sitting very low.

Search around the site a bit. You will see why everyone uses specific sizes.

I have 19x8 with +48 Rota Blades, and they fit perfectly. The only time I ever rubbed was when I was already tucking tire. Oh, and they're for sale, too.

19's are the biggest rim that should be on the CL. 20s dont fit IMO.

These are 19x8.5 with a 45 offset dropped on H&R Springs

if you really want to know what fits your car, then go to a wheels and tire shop. most of them will show you what will fit and what wont. plus some will even put the wheels on and if it rubs, then you won't have to buy them. but keep in mind, because 20's are more popular, the wheels and tires will not be as costly as the 19's just because 20's and up are more in demand. So like I said, if you want a diffenate answer take your car to a wheels shop. That's the best way. Also, the offset doesn't really matter. well, it does but you also have to consider the rim size and then factor in the offset. and as far as ride quality goes, there's not going to be much of a difference between the two (19 and 20) because there's like almost 1" difference in tire height.
check out the site below to see my ride with 225/30/20 tire and 20x8 w/40 offset and lowered 1.75" all around. and now rubbing at all, even on hard dips.

I run 8" wide wheels with a +45 offset, and I knick the tires on rough bumps. Go ahead and do what you want, but from the collective opinions of ALL of us CL owners so far in this thread, it would not be a very good idea.

Hold the phone, these are the best fitting 20" wheels for the CL, bare none, 20" x 8.5" with a 52mm offset, hubcentric 64.1 centerbore and a class leading 3.5" lip, can't beat that, check out the light weight too...
