That's where it gets tricky. The 225 means the tire is 225 mm wide from it's widest point on it's outer sidewall to it's widest point at it's inner sidewall, this is the "section width."
The 45 or 40 is the aspect ratio. It is NOT a direct measurement in millimeters. It is a ratio of the sidewall height to the section width. A 45 series tire will have a sidewall that is 45% of the section width of the tire, a 40 series tire will have a sidewall that is 40% of the section width of the tire.
The problem is that it isn't always true. If you look at the rear tires on a Lambo they are paper thin in sidewall height but more than a foot wide and they still say that they are 335/30-18. If they are 335mm wide and the sidewall is 30% of the width (roughly 1/3rd) that would mean they are 10 centimeters high. I call on LP640's having a 10 centimeter sidewall.

I have had 18 x 8 (sparkle silver) a-specs for a while now. Note, 8 inches wide. I run 225/40-18 Kumho ASX, but with the streets in Philly have a few bent wheels and put a few bubbles in my tires... so be careful!
Edit: I rolled my rear fenders and have coilovers. I rub every now and again when there is some weight in the backseat/trunk.

I had the 18X8.5s on my 03 6 speed with 225/45s and Eibach springs (1.6 inch drop?) only rub I got was with my large in-laws in back seat and hitting a bit of a dip in the road. Other than that...no issues.
