03cls6speed burns clutch when shifting from 1st to 2nd when spinning tires

anyone out there have a problem when spinning tires in first gear and trying to grab second gear to make it spin out that the clutch does not engage and the rpm's stop at like 5,500 rpms and the cars does not speed up? after that all you can smell is clutch... anyone out there have a 6spd and it does that or is it just my car????

WOW!

I don't know how you do it. I've never been able to wear out a clutch in my life.

What's your secret?

The secret is dumping your clutch at 7k rpm in first gear :P

No, I heard it’s more effective to just hold it PARTIALLY engaged.
You get more “burn action” that way.

I will not flame you. However whenever you smell clutch that is bad. Can you explain exactly what you are doing? Do you mean slipping the clutch in 1st then hitting 2nd? or what?

Sorry to say ... but, outside of some on-off-switch-clutch plates that need a weight lifter to operate, ALL clutch plates WILL wear out with heavy abuse (AKA hard driving). Since abuse is in the eye of the beholder, it is possible to take just about ANY nice car off ANY lot and destroy the clutch in about 24-hours (or less). Give me enough $$$, and I'll prove it....

Its friction material and it's going to wear. The amount of wear is pretty similar to the wear different people get with brake materials...

Simply slowing down the shifts by a few tenths of a second and matching the revs between shifts -- along with double clutching -- can go along way to keeping the synchros and clutch from wearing out.

Finally, if the only thing making me think my car was SHIT was the clutch, I'd look into a heavy pressure plate and some gonzo friction material....

And, a link that spells out the basics of clutch material:

http://howstuffworks.lycoszone.com/clutch3.htm

Yea That is probley my biggest complaint, but i guess i will just have to replace the clutch every 20k miles, the only other clutch is the crappy comptech one!

Ohh yea and front wheel drive Sucks??

I have had a hell of a lot of horsepower on my car and I never 'wore' the clutch out - the breakage issue is a different story, but its not the clutch disc wearing out.

If you smell clutch all the time... (or even only when you race)... it just means you suck as a driver.. sorry to say!

I have driven my car hard on certain occasions... taken it to the track etc... the clutch NEVER smells!

I run my car to the rev limiter in first and hit second with a slight chirp all the time. What's happening here I think is you are getting wheel spin in first and then shifting into second. When you are spinning in first the car will not be going fast enough to chirp or spin the tires in second. You're going way too slow to dump the clutch at full throttle in second. What you are doing will burn almost any clutch. This car won't smoke the tires in second gear but it will smoke the clutch.

ok ok ok to all of you people who are acting like this is my first car i bought and just learning how to drive a stick are definetly wrong! I have been racing for the last 7 years at the track and at local street races, trust me I know how to drive sticks REAL GOOD. I used to cut nothing but mid and low 5 second lights at the track, and won lost of money on street races with slower cars then I am racing.... I rely on driving skillz!!!

What I was trying to explain is that when I am spinning tires in first gear and I am going like 35mph and try and grab second gear and chirp it out all the car does is fall on its face and rev up the rpm's. I talked to a guy a couple of weeks ago and he drives a s2000, he said that honda transmissions do that for some reason. His s2000 does it every now and then.

I think I can go to the track and run bone stock in my cls6spd a 14.30

I agree totally with what you say about the stock tires sucking ass... But I feel totally confident that if I feather the car out the gate and launch clean that I could run atleast a 14.4 strong possiblity a 14.3 I seen somewhere on this cl forum that someone had ran a 2.1 60ft at the track. I used to have a 94' accord 4 door that only had cai, header, and exaust and I ran a best time of 1.9 in the 60ft!!! ..... It was a 4 door also.. I deffinetly need a set of tires for it .. these stock tires can't hold the car on the road at medium launch so in all actuality if we got a real good tire under our cars we could pick up at least 3 tenths in the 1/4 mile

I have probably 15 drag passes on my CL-S6 and never once have I come close to smelling clutch smoke or having the clutch spin when I shift into the next gear. The real way to see if you need a new clutch is to floor it while already in a higher gear (3+) and if it slips then you need a new clutch. These cars are not meanto be be doing crazy burnouts and for the first 3 gears, so start taking it a easier on the car. Before you know it you're gonna need cv joints because of all the axle hop you've induced.

And until you pull a 14.3 at a track noone here will believe that you can.

Just got in a race today and took my first loss. (20-1) .... It was a 99' eclips with a 15lb turbo. He said he runs low 13's... We hit it from a 40 mph roll up to 105mph. He pulled me about 80 mph and only got out total by a 1 car lead. If we had raced 1/4 mile he would have murdered me but the cls6spd is deffinetly not a bad car bone stock to race people with.

I've never smelt clutch on mine either. I don't race it often now but I've probably made about 12 or so drag strip passes. I think you either have a faulty clutch or don't know how to drive this car. No one else has had this problem that I know of on the board and we have quite a few 6 speeders on the forum.

Most likely you're giving it too much gas too soon without the clutch quite engaging. Let the clutch engage before you mash the gas pedal down.

Seriously, I have a 2K2 Max 6 speed and I have not driven stick in 12 years. Just want to be careful.

when I had the car for about a month I let my brother drive it and when we pulled back into his driveway I smelled the clutch burning....its a really bad smell...one that makes you say "thats not normal" only time I smelled it since I knew he was short shifting it and riding the clutch a bit in between shifts. Since that one time never since I know what Im doing and see no need to ruin the clutch before it's time

Yes. I'm really getting the feeling he's just a troll - a troll that's trying to piss off those who can actually drive with a manual gearbox.

Maybe if the question was coherently written like yours above, he would get his answer without all the BS.

And you can keep that civic/cl shit to yourself...you don't want us to start talkin shit on your eclipse do you? Relax.

I'd say call the dealer if he's sure it's not just him getting used to the clutch.

He did say he's had sticks before...so who knows. Doesn't sound promising either way...
