TDC alignment?

Hello.

I was just about to do the valve DIY but there was somthing to bother me. Please look the picture.
The one on the left side is from this forum and another is from a manual. Which one is the correct one or dosen't matter?

Thanks.

Personally, Id follow what the "manumal" says.

But yes, this is a bit peculiar.

I can see where confusion can come into play when the TB cover has been removed, as in the picture provided. In the service manual 01-03 CL: (page 6-22; Valve Clearance Adjustment), the illustration depicts the setting of TDC for No. 1 piston with the timing belt covers on the car, viewing the camshaft pulley through the TB cover portal(s). At the bottom of the viewing portal, there is a pointer molded into the plastic of the cover. This pointer is subsequently used to line up with the long line under the #1 on the front camshaft pulley to achieve TDC.

If I had the ability to scan, I would provide the illustration, but I suck at the interweb.

Interesting.

So the long marker on the gear is used when the timing belt cover is on.

And the marker on the outermost portion of the gear is used to line up with the mark on the head.

A simple test could be performed by just putting the top TB cover on, reasonably secure it, align the long line under the number with the view portal pointer, remove the TB cover without misaligning the camshaft, observe which lines fall in place and that would be what one would use with the TB covers off the car.
