My SRS light came on my 2000 TL, and I took it in after a few weeks, only to find out that I was 4 days over the 10 year warranty extension, and the dealer refused to cover it. I called American Honda customer relations and they refused too. Any ideas on how I can get this covered?

kinda depends on what sets off the SRS light. if its the ODPS or whatever the system is called thats in the passenger seat, then yes, there is a limited time warranty on that.

If its the seatbelt buckle that sets it off, then it has a lifetime warranty. Assuming you are in the US. I've had my passenger buckle set my SRS light off and it was replaced free of charge, I suspect now that my driver's buckle is becoming faulty.

I was cleaning my car the other day and as soon as I finished I started the car, only to be greeted by the SRS light. I took it to the dealership. They scanned the car and told me it was the OPDS system. They cleared the light for me and scheduled an appointment to replace the system once the part comes in. Next week my car will be fixed and I won't have to pay a thing.

I also have the srs light on, nothing happened to the car, and i had a diagnostic tool connected which pulled up no codes, i tried reseting the srs light myslef by shorting out the mes connector, and that didn't seem to work.

i called the dealer, at first they said you need to replace the airbags, then i was like "why would i do that, they are all good", then he's like we have to charge you a diagnostic, i was like "fine"

then I asked him about the seat belts being under a lifetime warranty, i really wanna get them replaced, because they're pretty worn out, he told me that if they determine the car was in an accident then they charge me to change the belts.

my question is, do they depend on the srs unit to see if it pulls up any accident codes?

what would be a good excuse i can give them to replace the seat belts?

Also, what dealer do you go to rkmj?

they only replace the belts if they are faulty. If they are simply worn but still functional, they will not replace them.

ok, so since my srs light is on, they'll scan it and it wont have any crash codes stored, the airbags are intact, so the only thing left is the seat belts, right?

i've had replaced entire seatbelt bc it wasnt rolling back when you pulled it. if you have SRS light they might replace just a buckle. should be free. its lifetime warranty. if they dont go to the other dealer.

well i consider not retracting more faulty then say a belt with slightly fuzzed edges and a stain on it.
If its the buckle (my buckle tripped my SRS light before) then they will replace for free.

Anyone got this done recently? My SRS light popped on this weekend. Strange too, I drove to the store it was fine, got out & started the car & bam light on.

I really hate the dealers by me & really don't want to go to them. Anyone have working instructions on how to reset the SRS system & make the light go off? The link in the FAQ is dead.

The OPDS unit is easy to fix. You can remove the seat back cover on the passenger seat, unplug and unscrew the OPDS unit and replace it. It costs about $ 150 for the TL if you buy it online. Can do it in a few minutes. Then you need to reset it using the wire clip procedure posted in this forum.

The OPDS sensor, is a whole new story. That requires replacing your seat cushion, which has it built in. I don't know what it takes to do that.

In my case, It was the OPDS sensor. Foolishly I replaced the unit, and tried a reset, which did not work. Then had the dealer replace the sensor.

Mine was out of warranty too, but by 4 days. The dealer refused to cover it initially. I called Acura customer service, and the same thing happened. But then I wrote them a paper letter and faxed it (on someone on this board suggesting it), and they made the dealer honor the warranty.

I had mine or a few weeks, it was the seatbelt. They replaced it and it was FREE, it must have burned them at the stealership. Saved by a warranty.

So I reset the light. It's off now. What does that mean? A temporary problem?

Could be. My light came on a couple times recently after I reset it. I thought maybe it was the driver's buckle this time but I couldnt set it off like I did when the passenger buckle was faulty. Hasnt been on for months now.

So I say dont worry about it unless it pops on constantly after you reset it.

SRS indicator light Warranty Extension

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DATE: April 5, 2006

TO: All Acura Sales, Service & Parts Managers

FROM: American Honda Service Division

RE: Warranty Extension Announcement

On March 2, 2006, we announced an OPDS (occupant position detection system) warranty extension for certain 2001–03 3.2CLs, 2001–02 MDXs, 1999–03 3.5RLs, selected 2004 RLs, 2002–04 RSXs, and 2000–03 3.2TLs.

Some affected vehicles may have a problem with the OPDS that causes the SRS indicator to stay on with one or more SRS DTCs. To ensure continued reliability with the OPDS, affected vehicles have an extended warranty on the OPDS unit and the OPDS sensor. These parts are now covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Customer Notification

Approximately 480,000 vehicles are affected by this warranty extension. Notifications will start mailing on April 7, 2006, at a rate of 5,000 letters per day, and will span a 60-day period.

Even though the daily mail rate is quite large, it will have little or no impact on your service department because the only vehicles needing inspection and/or possible repair are those returned by clients with the specific complaint of an SRS indicator that won’t go off. For detailed repair, VIN, and warranty information, see S/B 06-008, Warranty Extension: OPDS Unit or OPDS Sensor Triggers SRS DTC(s) 15-1, 15-2, 15-3.

Thank you.

Guys:

I have the SRS light problem 2 times in my 2003 CLs and the delaer replaced the seat belt buckle for free, because it has a lifetime warranty.

Check before you pay anything. Let me know if you need the code number.

Good luck

Well crap, resetting it no longer works for me. Light still on.
Question, Do the airbags still work with the SRS light on??
I have a letter I was sent by Acura with the warranty extension on it. I hope they don't try some BS. Although it's a dealer & they suck by me so I'm preparing to have to fight to get it fixed for free.

Possibly

The Owners manual states:
The purpose of the SRS indicator light is to alert you to a potential problem with your front airbags. This light will also alert you to a potential problem with your automatic seat belt tensioners or your side airbags or passenger's side airbag automatic cutoff system.

If the light comes on at any other time, or does not come on at all, you should have it check by your dealer. For example:
1) If the SRS indicator light does not come on after you turn the ignition ON(II).
2) If the light stays on after the engine starts.
3) If the light comes on or flashes on and off while you drive.
If you see any of these indications, your front or side airbags may not deploy, your passenger's side airbag automatic cut off system may not work properly, or your seat belt tensioners may not work when you need them.

Ha! I have a letter also from Acura, dated Spring to Summer 2007. Titled-Warranty Extention: Main Components of the Occupant Position Detection System.

The third paragraph states:
'If the red supplemental restraint system (SRS) indicator on the instrument panel stays on, take your vehicle to any Acura dealer for an inspection. If there is a problem with the OPDS control unit or the OPDS sensor, and your vehicle is within the extended warranty time/mileage period, the dealer will replace the control unit or the sensor, free of charge. The inspection is also free of charge, even if there is not a problem with the OPDS control unit or the OPDS sensor and your vehicle is within the extended warranty time/milege period. Other components of the OPDS and the SRS are covered by your vehicle's normal warranty.'

*Warranty Extention to 10 years or 150K, whichever occurs first.*

If you have the letter to present, they should not give you any sh*t!

Please update with your results.
Oh, and the sticker that came with the car reflects that the:
MSRP Includes
-Lifetime Seat Belt Warranty...

So, if they find a problem with the 'Seat Belt' system, they should eat the cost to fix it.hehe

Good Luck.

Fuzzy, do you know what keeps setting it off after you reset it? Cause if its the belt buckle then you shouldn't have an issue getting it fixed.

i hope you guys get better treatment than i did. my local stealership has a min rate of $100/hr even just for checking the code.

i previously tried the reset procedure and it didn't work for me (this was a long time ago, i can do it now if i try). i went to the stealership and of course, it was an old DTC. they reset it for $100 and 5 mins of their time. wasn't covered under any warranty.

make sure you know all costs before you go in!

10 years/150k miles
mine is an '02 and 76k miles (so time wise I'm cutting it close)

Every time it has come on was after I turn the ignition off & then back on quick.
Like a quick stop.

I never touched the seat belt buckle.

Went to drop the car off at 7am this morning. The service writer was trying to tell me there was a $68 inspection fee. I showed him the letter from Acura and it went to Free.99. While I was waiting for my ride to work, he came up and said that they found it to be the sensor in the passenger seat belt. Lifetime warranty, has to be ordered in. Took my car to work and will have to bring it back in when they get the part in. The service writer was a bit rude but he seemed nicer when he finally understood why I said "it should be free" regardless. lol

Seems like it might not be seatbelt related. You should still be covered under the extended warranty for ODPS.

Guys, if I understand correctly, this also affects some of the TL owners, right?

I don't have this letter that some of you are referring to, however I'm hoping that the dealership will still be able to fix it free, anybody could recommend a good dealer in NY / NJ?

Warranty Letter

I'm the second owner and my SRS light has been on for 2 yrs. even went as far as to buy a code reader to try to reset it myself. My Temecula dealer is tough on giving anything away. Is this Letter on this site i could down load and use?

Thanx for any help

I had the SRS system checked today per the Acura Warranty Extention letter. They found that the light was triggered by a faulty driverside seatbelt buckle switch failure.

The inspection and replacement of the buckle were free under the warranty.

SRS Light

Ok so the light is on. I guess what I want to know is; does the air bag work. If not, if I reset it and the light goes off, will the air bag work.

BTW, I'm new to the sight and I've already solved my potentially exploding mirrors, and the starting problem due to the fuel pump relay....great job to everyone involved. thanks.

With the SRS light on, the airbags may or may not deploy in an accident.

With the SRS resetted and off, the airbags will deploy normally.

You can still get it fixed if its the seatbelt buckles thats setting it off. The seatbelt warranty is lifetime.

This is the reason i came across ACURAZINE Dew to my car being a 02 tl BUT only at 85k they said Its to late and i can't get this warranty Does anyone know how much it would cost. ( the part that is covered in warranty )
I haven't had it checked out to see what the problem was ( just had started coming on about a month ago )

And also i have tried to reset with no prevail.

I used the bent paperclip as a jumper.
Inserted into Connector turned key to on ( it was suppost to blink but nothing happened, I tried starting the car, inserting after its ON, While its no key in ignition, While the key is in ignition, With the key in ACC mode.)

Maybe i am doing this wrong anything would help !
Also the price please!

Insert paper clip,
Turn key to "ON", when SRS light goes off
Remove paper clip quickly
When light comes back on, insert paper clip quickly
Remove paper clip when light goes off again
Turn key to OFF

When I say quickly, I mean within 3 seconds. It can be hard with a paper clip so I use 2 long wires.
