Should a paint chip go down the metal?
Should a paint chip go down the metal?
Hi Guys,
I had my hood repainted by a body shop about 4 years ago when I had a small fender bender. It looks like something was slammed down on my hood and a little chip of paint came off. Whats funny is that it doesn't look like there's any primer under it - instead of the multi-layered chip that happens on the rest of the car, where grey primer paint is visible underneath, the paint looks loose and can be easily pulled back with a fingernail. Should I just fix it with touch-up paint or complain to the body shop?
Here's a picture:

If the chip is severe enough, it could expose the bare metal. If that's the case and you want to repair it yourself, the Dupli-color chip and scratch kit includes primer.
Although I would think some members on here would tell you to go get it professionally repaired.

What I didn't take pictures of is the chips of paint that were loosely attached. Basically, it was a little tiny dent in the hood about a quarter of the size of the picture, when I went to touch it, loose bits of paint fell off and I removed them.
I'm thinking that the body shop either didn't use primer or cheaped-out on the paint job in some way. I'm not trying to get free work from the body shop unless they (obviously) did something wrong.

I had plenty of chips on my hood that went down to the metal, and that was OEM paint
Get touch-up paint or the kit mentioned above and fix it before rust forms. It may not look pretty, but its better then rust.

i've never seen a rock chip THAT big.
i would take it to another body shop (unbiased opinion) and have them take a look at it. if they feel something is not right with the paint work, then go back to the original shop and complain. the original shop may say it's not their fault since there is a ding and whatever else they may want to BS you with.
i've been down the road of paint failure on my rear bumper which was 3 yrs after the fact...it was a bit of a fight and a lot of barking up the food chain, but it was fixed in the end (replaced bumper and resprayed under warranty), at a sister shop in a different location. the more knowledge you have and other opinions from another reputable shop...will hopefully give you the arsenal you need to correct this. good luck.

That chip of paint came up like it did because of a mistake in pepping the car. I'm not sure this is what causes the ones that look like that but I suspect that what you are seeing is where a beed of sweat fell off the painter's brow back when they were wiping the car down just before it was painted.
You can daub something on it, some kind of touch up paint, and if you are very careful you can make it something less than horrible looking, but if you want it fixed right its going to cost you.
