Hood support struts on my '01 gave out this morning

Are the hood support struts only available at the dealer? And if so, are those a DIY item?

I think theyre about $30 for the pair at Auto Zone.

If you look at the joint where they attach to the brackets, there is a little black clip wrapped around. That keeps the ball secured in the housing. Take a small flathead screw driver and pry them out. When installing, just make sure the clips are in all the way and push the damper end onto the ball. You should hear a pop.

Thanks guys -- looks like AZ wants $40 for the pair, but I've got a credit at AAP, so I'll get them there.

It's weird how those things go out. Both of them worked yesterday, and then this morning, neither is working.

what civic said. pretty straight forward. takes 5 min. make sure you securely prop the hood up. once you take a strut off it will come down. i got my off ebay for ~30 shipped. be careful on the first time you try to pop the hood up. mine shot straight up. thought it was gonna rip right off.

I gotta hold my hood when I open it up.

I got mine from rockauto, the old ones looked original too. I ordered a set from ebay before and they were kinda iffy.

For whatever its worth I bought a pair of them this afternoon at Advance Auto, they ran me $21 each. I believe the part number on them was 6033 in whatever brand AA carries. They didn't have them in stock but the guy told me they would be in the store by 9:00am tomorrow - a sunday. We'll see.

The stock ones don't last too long. Easy to replace yourself, and the better aftermarket struts are pretty cheap too. I would recommend rockauto.

I just had the same problem. I bought 2 of the StrongArm 6322 hood lift supports on Amazon for $16 each. They seem to work well and were easy to self-install.
