Help: Motor Oil in Transmission (Manual)

Help: Motor Oil in Transmission (Manual)

I have a 2003 CL, manual transmission with 122,000 miles. My dad likes to work on cars so I had him change my transmission fluid. However, I just realized that he put 0W-20 full synthetic motor oil in my transmission! I have driven the car for about 60 miles and it seems to work ok but I’m worried that my car is screwed. What should I do? All advice is greatly appreciated.

There's a level of common sense needed to work on cars. You should probably tell him to stop.

Stop driving the car and replace the fluid ASAP

how sure are you that he put in motor oil?

I'm pretty sure the transmission would be grinding or displaying some sort of trouble, as the motor oil doesnt have all the properties of an automatic transmission fluid

Yea, make sure he did put motor oil in there. If there isn't any empty transmission fluid bottles in the trash then that's probably a good sign. Also look at the fluid that was drained out. If in doubt, change it again with new fluid.

BTW, the CL manual transmission does not use regular ATF for all does making fun of his Dad. His father was somewhat right. However, he has the wrong spec for the CL MT 6spd, which calls for 10w-30 or 10w-40 synthetic or Acura MT fluid. Also some member have used GM synchromesh for our manual trannies.

I have been using Mobil One 10w-40 synthetic for the past 50K with no problems.
