Gauge Cluster Bulb problem

Alright sorry if this is a repost but i couldnt find the answers im looking for when i searched. So i got out of work not too long ago and when i turned on my lights i noticed that the 8 and the 9 on the RPM gauge are out... i have a few questions. 1. Why is it only affecting that small area? 2. How much would the dealer want to fix this, or am i better off doing it myself? 3. Is it the bulb or can it be something else? 4. If it is the bulb, should i just replace them all so that they dont randomly go off like this one?.... THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Its just the bulb in that area. You can get a replacement bulb and install it yourself.

I believe youre looking for PN 35505-SJ4-003

I dont have a DIY, but its simple. Remove the dash trim, remove the cluster, and swap the bulb from the rear of the cluster.

Can you do me a favor and check something? When you turn your headlight switch from OFF to Middle, does your Odometer change brightness? How about from Middle to ON?

My odometer doesn't change brightness anymore, and I think it is supposed to. Just wanted to check. Thanks.

Also, it's a really easy job to change out that bulb. If you need help taking out the cluster, I can post the service manual pics.

If you turn on your parking or headlights, all of the guage lights and dash lights will turn on. If they dont, check the dimmer switch.

Yea, but the Odometer uses a different set of bulbs. I've gotten mixed reports about it.

They use different bulbs but they are all connected to the dimmer switch and they all turn on when the light stalk is turned.

No it's not. The odometer bulbs light up even when the speedo bulbs are off.

I've seen a video of the Odometer bulbs changing brightness when the headlight switch is activated. Someone on the TL side has also confirmed this.

I've also seen a video of the Odometer bulbs NOT changing brightness when the headlight switch is activated. My car doesn't change brightness.

I think my car used to change brightness also, but wasn't sure. I think that if you have never removed your cluster, then it will change the brightness. If you have messed with it, then it probably won't.

I'm just trying to understand the discrepancy.

STOCK cluster with odometer bulbs that change brightness when the headlights are activated. Skip to 1:30. (It's still kind of hard to see)

MODDED cluster with odometer bulbs that do NOT change brightness when the headlights are activated.

My cluster has been modded with LEDs, and the odometer does NOT change brightness.

Here is a thread in which a member confirms that the bulbs DO change brightness:

Well i do know that just the letters are lit up when the switch is off. When the switch is on, they are dimmer but the other lights go on too.

Ill double check though, I think I may have misunderstood you.

You want to see if the bulbs change brightness when you turn the lights on? Or when you adjust the brightness with the brightness control switch? I dont remember if they change when you turn the lights on. I think theyre at full brightness when the headlights are off then whatever you have the brightness set to when the headlights are on. I think.

Karanx - My camera didnt pick up the colors that well, but you can see the odometer stays at full brightness when the headlights are off.

When the lights get dim, I was using the dimmer switch.

OMG civicdrivr(what's your real name?), I owe you big for that video. Now I understand how it works.

The odo bulbs go:
Light switch Off -> Light switch ON
Max brightness -> Brightness set by dimmer

Before I put LEDs in my cluster, the odo brightness would change from "light off" to "light on". After my install I set the dimmer switch to Max, so the brightness didn't change when I changed the switch. If you keep the dimmer switch to medium, then ODO bulbs will change when turning on the lights.

Silly me, I thought I messed up the wiring or something lol. Thanks a lot for the video. Really cleared things up.
