Can't shift out of Park

My gf has an 01 CL-P and for the past few days while it has been cold, the cannot shift out of park. She has started the car and waited for it to warm up and tried again with no luck.

I also had her try to put the key in the slot next to the shifter and it still will not move out of Park. Has anyone come across this issue before, or any suggestions on what to check for/try?

Isnt there a some sort of release when you hit the brake?

There is and I had Ambreen try it this morning but no luck. I am going to give it a try after I pick her up from work and take her home.

1 of 3 things. Could be the brake switch ( check and see if the brakes are functioning), 2. Spilled soda or liquid. 3. The shifter cable may be loose or may need to be lubricated.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just checked and I sat there for like 5 minutes depressing the brake pedal like crazy. Brake lights were not coming on or would just flash. Finally they came on and stayed on. so looks like that is what it is. Now I need to figure out how muchit is gonna cost to fix.

No incline, flat surface. Looks like it is the brake switch.

No problem! check the brake fuse too, This could be a simple fix!
Lastly, I know this is a TL thread but the workings may be similar. One of the poster said they bought the part at pep boys for $40

I checked the fuse and it was good. I took a look at that link and looks like that is exactly what needs to be done to fix it. Thanks so much for finding that!

I found out why the manual release didn't work. The cap was still in place. gf didn't know that she needed to remove that. Once I removed it, I could get it out of park. Just no brake lights at the moment, but brakes work. Now I just need to get that part ad replace it in her car.

Thanks Again!!

Ah. Well check the DFW thread later this week. We usually end up deciding on Friday or Saturday if we are going to meet up or not.

I hear ya. Picked up the part today during lunch. Going to try to do it tonight after work if I can. Going to be hard though since it is dark when I get out of work and gf doesn't have a garage that the car sits in. I am hoping to fix it soon though.

GREAT thread.

I'm dealing with the same thing. I want to check the brake fuse first, but I can't seem to find where the brake fuse is. I checked the manual, but the brake fuse was not listed anywhere.

Which one is the brake fuse?

I have a 2002 TL.
