01 CLS HID Problem

Ok, my left headlight keeps going out. When I initially turn my headlights on it will come on but then about 2-3 minutes later it will go out. Once the car sits again for a lengthy period of time it will come back on then go out again. The color of the bulb is a little weird looking. Do you guys think it’s the bulb or the ballast? And what direction would you recommend for repair?
I did a research but all of the symptoms are from the flickering on and off. That’s not the case with mine.

Also does know where i can find the instructions on how to remove the bulb/ballast?

Thanks Guys!!!!!!!!

It could be a loose wire contact in the electrical connector. This happened to my 03 CL & the Acura dealer fixed it by re-crimping the wire to the terminal in the connector.

As for the weird color, it may be the bulb is nearing the end of its life. If it is the passenger side bulb, replacing it is easier than the driver side. Just loosen the bolt that holds the washer reservoir & remove the top half. Loosen the bracket that holds the power steering reservoir (to be pushed to the side) for easy access to the cap behind the headlight assy. Remove the torx screw that holds the cap & twist the cap off to access the bulb.

For driver side bulb, you'll have to remove the bumper in order to get to loosen the headlamp assy & then access the cap like above. There is no way to access the cap from above since the cap is obstructed by the air intake chamber (a very poor design by sleeping Honda engineers for maintenance purpose).

I have replaced both bulbs w/ Morimoto 5000K HID bulb & loved it. Much whiter than the stock 4300K. Got these from http://www.theretrofitsource.com

Note: If the air intake is replaced by one of those aftermarket replacement units like AEM, then you'll have all the room needed to access the driver side cap in the future.

Good luck

It could be the ballast. Swap the bulbs and see if the problem stays on that side. If not, just get new bulbs.

Removing the top half of the washer reservoir will allow you to access the passenger side headlight assembly cap.

The driver side headlight assembly cap is obstructed by the intake air scoop. This air scoop is sitting right behind the cap. There is no way (from my experience) that I know of to get to this unless you remove the bumper.

Last time, when my ballast died, I have no light at all.

To remove the air intake box, you'll have to remove the bumper first to get to it. Believe me, I dreaded this bumper removal for some time & finally bit the bullet & did it. It wasn't that difficult, but it would be helpful to have a buddy to help you out.

And that was the reason why I decided to yank out the air intake chamber & replace it with an AEM intake system. No more bumper removal hassle next time I have to replace the driver side HID bulb.

don't be scurred. removing the bumper is a piece of cake. Two bolts right where the bumper meets the fender in the wheel well. two bolts under each wheel well. Remove all the little black clips (they break easy). Then there are 3 screws under the plastic cover where the hood latch is. Then pull out on the bumper where the wheel well is.

im trying to remember, but yes pretty sure you just unplug the clips to the lights (3) and there are a few obvious bolts to remove the light. There is a metal piece the light sits on and that comes out with the headlight. Make sure unplug your battery before you switch the HID bulbs. If the same problem persists, your ballast is shot. PM me for pricing info.
