Another car to look at IMO is the Volvo V70-R. 300hp, available 6MT, AWD, unassuming. I love that thing.

Still a heavy car though.

head gaskets were a big issue for Subie, BUT not on the turbo cars though (and normally once fixed correctly, with the updated head gasket, they don't have issues again; it's a multi-layered gasket, vs a single-layer gasket)

but yes Subie wins hands-down over Volvo (and yes Subie has there quirks, but not as many as Volvo though; here's one the neutral switch on manual trans wear out when people live on dirt roads, due to the vibrations; the spring inside gets too weak; but it throws an idle control code though )(even though i would almost prefer to work on Volvo's then like Jag, Mercedes, and other pain-in-the-ass brands to work on)

As far as i know weak spots on the wrx are glass trannys in 2000-2003 but iirc in 2004 the problem was solved. 60k on the timing belt is also anoying. What else ?

newer timing belts are actually 105k, and even then they are actually one of the easier ones to do (especially once the radiator is pulled, for even more room; coolant is drained for water pump anyways)

turbos get starved of oil and crap out, but that is more due to lack of maintenance though, and plugging up the banjo bolt filter (supply line)(regular oil changes basically prevents that fully, even then periodically cleaning it will do too)(rear main bearings also, that you have to split the block, but AGAIN lack of maintenance is the culprit there

cats also seem to be on the weak side, especially the forestor's, but then again if you go with a straight down pipe, no worries (early WRX's, up-pipe with the built in cat, break apart and take turbos along for the ride, but again aftermarket removes that)

inner tie rods are not the best either, but that is more on higher mileage cars though, and where it has been driven...

another thing i would say is wheel bearings, but that is mainly when you live up in the mountains though, and speed down on a regular basis (alot of side loads repetitively, most are well over 100k though, if not 150k+)

also KNOCK SENSORS, LOVE to go also, but that's like $100 roughly, and 30 minutes to replace, again 80-90k miles if not more (and again depends on prior use, it gets baked where it is)

alternators, BUT that is more when people drive with the headlights on, on a regular basis (since they switch off with the car), but even that is like 150k+ miles

almost forgot, valve cover gaskets, like to leak, but normally they start weeping first, and are not too bad to replace actually

there are still a couple of other quirks along with those, but i would say those are the main ones, and most of those are dependent on use sort of things, but other wise Subies are fairly reliable cars (not the best on gas mileage though, but part of that is the AWD system)

one more thing plugs can be kinda bitch to replace also, but that is the nature of the boxer motor with having the framerails right there (SOHC"S are quite easy, it's the DOHC which take patience, but still not hard though, just takes a little bit of time)

biggest thing i can say is REGULAR MAINTENANCE, will prolong the life of the car

btw CV axle's on the front , especially the inner boots, the cats love to bake them (it takes MAYBE an hour to replace a side; and again depends on use with how hot that cat gets on a regular basis)

and for those glass trannies, not so much, it 's mainly when you start pushing more power, and shifting rougher when they break (under DD and stock power, they do not have nearly as many issues)

biggest thing i would say is what breaks/fails, is kinda dependent how how it's driven and been maintained then anything (ie: lack of plug changes, causes it to misfire occasionally putting more raw fuel into the cats, making them run hotter; but it does not always prevent failures though, it's just where you do see them more often though)

also quality gas helps too

Pretty dope. First time I've seen a Forester modded.

Better than what I expected but wouldn't be my first choice.

I'd probably rather get a WRX wagon.

Actually I really wanted an A3 for a while now...being a former owner of 2 Golfs and a GTi...also since they just came out with the RS3!

fuel filter occasionally also (depending on year, very easy to change if it does not have a "lifetime" one)

and you basically covered it all except for coolant changes, and brake fluid too, other then that nothing really needs special attention "per sa", it's more of just following the maintenance schedule (severe preferred)

i forgot one, change the clutch fluid (only brake fluid btw) along with the brake fluid, the hose likes to deteriorate and take out the master and slave cylinders, but again it's more about regular maintenance and keeping fresh fluid in it

22b is overseas, so 2.5rs which is going to be alot more accessible to us (and the 2.5rs would just need some stripping to help meet the 22b weight)

maybe not the lightest combo, but http://www.perrinperformance.com/pages/show/32
but H6 turbo with a 6 speed (and considering the fact that subaru motors will swap chassis's with little hassle (basically direct bolt -in), biggest thing is wiring)

some scary winter update

first of all i fucking hate patholes !!! brand new tire trashed
so lil story from today...
i get up 5am to clean up the car from ice it took me about 25min...

started driving slowly to work and i noticed that my car is acting weird it had flat tire after hiting pathole last night... so i went to my parents house to borrow a lil compressor bc i though its something small but tire didnt take any air so i was about to leave the car there and call friend to pick me up, something inside my head told me to drive the car back to my apartment and leave it there and do not leave it at parents house so i did hour later my mom called my with this info that the fucking tree fell of on our parking and damaged a car... i was shocked. i would park just where the silver neon seats

im just glad that i drove my car back on flat tire to my apartment... uffff

only 29 degrees out :shakehead, been starting my car in the mourning at like -6 degrees (and thank god for a car port, with not having to scrape it off) , and the P/S pump does not like it too much either, it whines for like 5 seconds then goes away

and , on missing that tree too (looks like it would have mainly just been a bunch of scratches, but still not having to deal with them though)

and on that tire had the same thing basically happen to me also once, ran over something the night before (but i was going like 100 though, and heard a thump, of something hitting the rear wheelwell), and it was completely flat the next mourning; destroyed the tire too (when you can see the belts because a chunk of the tread is missing, not very good)

FTW (going to need it for this coming year at the drags)

and don't cheap out either, your head is worth more then the $50 special

and i would buy one local, so you can actually try it on first to make sure it fits correctly
as far as buying one local, i just went to my local powersports/motorcycle dealer (normally just needs the DOT and/or Snell approval ratings, which basically every helmet there had), they had a VERY broad selection (a larger dealer though, and the funny part is that i was picking up spark plugs for my car, when i walked by the "helmet" department, and knew i was going to need one very shortly, so i picked one up) with multiple brands to chose from (i ended up with a SHOEI, for roughly $250 iirc, it's a plain black one, but you are not paying any extra for all the flashy graphics though)

im gonna buy plain one too but i think open face will be good enough for autox or anything

i went to this site they looks good enough for me they arent expensive $70-120 for open face

HJC

http://www.hjchelmets.com/

SHOEI are more expensive

http://www.shoei-helmets.com/Road.aspx

or ARAI

for me helmet is a helmet and i think im gonna start of with something not that expensivebut for sure i will need to go and test fit one somewhere too

first of all, what you get for more money is a lighter helmet, which is going to put less strain on your neck, if/when you crash (better safe then sorry)

then also Arai is basically considered the Ferrari of helmets, top of the line (i wanted one, but yes they are kinda $ though; and the way i see it too kinda is i want one that could possibly be run in F1 if needed; in that they actually have the technology to make one safe enough; but i also know SHOEI is not far behind, and they seem to be bigger in the motorcycle racing world then anything, so they are also close to the top of the game

as far as open face; all i am going to say is "The Intimidator"

i want this one

but to be honest you dont want to run full helmet if you dont have to its not comfortable and it start to stink sooner

all the helmets i posted meets standards to start in autox or drag race

also ONE MAJOR ISSUE i see with the one you posted a link to, it is ONLY Snell 2005 approved, which basically iirc still means it is good till 2014

where the one i posted is Snell 2010 approve, so the design is good till 2019 iirc (or 5 years [normally] from when the helmet was manufactured)

Go with a full face helmet.

The visor is (should be) shatterproof. That will protect your eyes if you get into an accident. The chin protector will help too. Ive got a Shoei RF1000 for the bike. I got it two years ago. Theyre making the RF1100 now. You might be able to find the RF1000 for a good price online. For car use, you wont notice the differences between the two.

Most of the dealers in my area dont carry a large selection of helmets, you may have better luck.
