Tuesday's 5.4 magnitude quake is less than the last big shake in the direct vicinity. In 1987, the magnitude 5.9 Whittier Narrows quake heavily damaged older buildings and houses in communities east of Los Angeles.
It's also far less powerful than the magnitude 6.7 Northridge earthquake of 1994. That killed 72 people, injured more than 9,000 and caused $25 billion in damage.

In Florida, or on the east coast for that matter you can see a hurricane at least a week prior. With that you can evacuate pretty much anything you want. How much warning did you get with that last shake?
