Cleared, Painted, and Wet Sanded Headlights
well i got amitious this weekend and decided to do the headlights... for some reason it was the one thing i was afraid to do on the car but after getting into it i had no problems... i used the same silver metallic paint I used on the interior and it matches perfect.. after i got them back together that looked like crap so i decided to wet sand them came out clear as hell... let me know what you guys think. it is kind of hard to tell how the paint matches since it is cloudy outside and there are shadows but when the sun is out it is dead on...

wet sanding was super easy... quick DIY below
parts--
bucket
dish soap (do not use car soap)
1000 and 2000 grit sandpaper (available at Pepboys or autozone)
electric buffer (6 inch model for 24.99 at Pepboys)
Wool bonet for the buffer
mothers plastic polish (got mine from Pep Boys)
1. use some masking tape to tape off around the lights
2. put 3 or 4 drops of dishs oap in the bucket and put about 2 inches of water
3. soak 2 pieces (one for each light) 1000 grit for about 5 minutes
4. sand the light in staright lines (DO NOT SWIRL) first horizontal then vertical
make sure to keep wetting the sandpaper as you go.
5. soak two pieces of 2000 grit and repeat the sanding.
6. wash off the soap with water and dry the lights
7. put 5 or 6 globs of plastic polish in different spots on one light
8. rub it all over the ligth with the buffer (while it is off)
9. turn on the buffer and work from top to bottom
make sure you do not keep it in once space for more than a couple of seconds
or you will burn the plastic
10. keep buffing untill it is clear..
you should use the plastic polish everytime you wax your car to help keep the lights new...
let me know if you guys have any questions...

cant tell you exactly where i read it (i will look) but it said somewhere that the additives in car soap work againt the polish... maybe because most car soaps contain a kind of wax... maybe someone else can shed some light if i dont find the thread... sorry i dont have a better answer right now.

Dont use car soap, it will not allow you to sand the headlight, use dish soap
