z4 3.0 vs. boxster
No this isnt a racing thread
In looking at the two cars, they seem to have very similar stats (z4 3.0 and the non-S boxster both have 225 hp). In addition, a FULLY loaded z4 APPROACHES the price of a boxster, and so im just curious which in the better car? I know the z4 is cheaper, but is the boxster worth the extra amount of money, or simply high for the name?
BTW im not planning to buy either car...I was just curious, and since a lot of people on this board are much more informed than I am...I'd thought I'd ask
thx

Maybe I am biased towards Porsche, but Porsche's always look classic. The new Z4 while beautiful may end up looking a little "funky" in a few years. I have an OLD 911 SC and it turns heads like crazy at shows because it is so classic, when I look at my Boxter next to it, it has the same classic lines and best ass end ever on a Porsche.

Z4 is pretty sharp. Tough decision. I was sitting in one a couple of days ago. I believe it stickered for $50,000. 3.0l
Believe it or not, there is a good ammount of trunk space in the Z4. And a 6' driver could be pretty comfortable in it. Probably depend on their build.

money wise..i believe the S2k is your best bet..you can get one for under 35k.....as for performance..i am not sure, but i have been in the S2k and i loved it...
Personally..it is a win win situation..each car is sweet...just a matter of how much money you want to spend..
for me
1. Porsche
2.BMW
3.Honda

Z4 easy. but not in that chick shade of blue they have, in black, silver, or white.
the Boxster is a Porsche with panties. its also ugly as sin with the top up. atleast in the s2k and Z4 it looks just as cool with the top up as it does when its down.
i'd even take the s2k over the boxster.

Jeez that was harsh ItalianStallion! I have to disagree with the panties statement, it is every bit a Porsche in handling and fun.(actually the new Carrerras are the ones with panties in my opinion...they even have cup holders standard now). I do agree about the top though, I think all convertibles look like crap with it up, that's why the only time mine ever gets driven is with the top down, speedster humps on, or with the hardtop on. All 3 are win/win cars but a few years and body changes will be the true test, which ones will still look good and which ones will look dated. I also think the S2K should have been an Acura instead of a Honda to put it in the league where it really belongs.

I recently read a European car mag and they had very little to say about the Z4 in their Z4 vs. Boxster S comparison. They ragged on the Z3 for about a full page and then said the Z4 was an improvement but still not worthy of being compared to the Boxster. The Boxster may not be as nice as a 911, but most drivers of the Boxster will tell you the fun factor is amazing.

Alright, I am not sure why you guys are saying the Boxter is crap or a Porsche on panties or whatever, but it's not. The only thing it doesn't have compared to the 911 is the power and luxury. It is a very fun car to drive! The S2000, I woldn't really bother with. Sure it looks good, abd handles pretty well, but you have to rev the motor up too high to get any useful power. And it's pretty small inside. The Z4, I am not sure about. Haven't seen one in person yet or driven one. But It seems like an Ok car. Looks a little funky, but it's got good power and it's supposed to handle pretty descent. But the choice is up to you on what to get.

The Z4 starts at $41k. Options put it at about $50k. Now which one do you want? HP numbers don't necessarily translate into performance numbers either. I think the Boxster S is about .5 sec faster to 60 in the mags...but that's in the mags.

No doubt that Boxster S will outperform the Z4. Boxster S can out brake and corner the Z4, E46 M3 and even the 996TT. Hopefully, BMW will make ///M Z4 in the future to compete w/Boxster S.

If you campare the regular Boxster with the Z4 in price, it's almost the same. And 75k for the Boxster S? No way! I just went to their web site and the only thing I didn't get was the Navigation, and it only came to like 62k.

Just because you can build one on the website doesn't mean you can buy one at that price. Most dealers here in LA sell well above MSRP. Wouldn't be surprized if that were the case elsewhere.
Regardless, you could probably (wild ass guess here) take that same increase from a Boxster to Boxster S (easily $10k) and apply that to the Z4 and get similar performance increases. No?
You can get a moderately loaded Z4 for the base price of a Boxster. By the time you add all of the "must-buy" options for a boxster, you're well into the $50k range. They may be fun as hell to drive, but to me, seeing one on the road still screams either (A) I couldn't afford a real Porsche (see M-B 230) or (B) Like oh-my-gawd, daddy got me this for my 16th B-Day.
Just my opinion. I'm a hypocrite anyway, I wouldn't turn down a Boxster either Good thread/read.

go to carsdirect.com, start with a 911 turbo (the REALLY expensive one), and add all the options you would want on its...I find it (at least mildly) entertaining.

The Boxster S is a different animal than the base Boxster. Same as the M3 is different animal than the 330.
Point being, you cannot compare the Z4 against the Boxster S because it's a different class of car. It would be like putting a CL S vs. a M3, even though the CL would walk the 330
