You don't need a Spring Compressor

I installed my front springs the other day and I had read you needed a spring compressor to do the install. Well, it was about midnight when I finally got to that point and no where was open to rent one. I ended up using a ghetto method to get the spring/shock put back together. It isn't pretty but it's better than paying to rent a springs compressor

Congrats even though I wouldn't recommend doing it that way.

Way too dangerous.

Looks a bit shaky to me. I'd rather use the correct tool for the job. Could end up costing a lot more in the long run if things go wrong - like a broken jaw if the jack slips.

Bouncing spring…..metal to metal sparks….then KABOOM !!!

Isn't that a gas line just above and to the right of the spring? Definitely a potential Darwin award winner in the making. Let's see, for the sake of saving a couple of $$s and a trip to the local auto supply store, this guy risks serious bodily injury and blowing up his house. Real smart.

A little history as to why I did this....

I had the local speed shop install the new H&R OE Sports on my car on Wednesday. I picked it up around 6pm and it looked like shit in the front. I needed to leave town on Thursday morning so I had to get the springs redone that night and I didn't have a spring compressor. I would have liked to go the safe route, but there wasn't a place open to get one of them.

I heard of one story where a guy broke his wrist using the “stick & rope” method.
The stick slipped and the rope made it spin around like a plane’s propeller…..WHACK !!!

I put my rear spring together without the compressor. They don't have a lot of tension on them. With shorter springs you can actually get the top nut started without putting pressure on them. Don't think I'd attempt the fronts though.

Oh shit I just saw the pictue!! (56k = :ghey That's a little scary!

I would of lived with how it 'looked' until I could redo it safely. Very creative though.

wow you guys are brutal... yeah thats an awesome idea.... i think compressing you spring is worth potentially damaging a water heater... i mean c'mon its summer!!! who need hot water anyways?!?!?

as for blocking off the caster wheels on the jack... thats really over rated...

but dude seriously you shouldn't stack dirty shoes together like that, debris may fall from one and you could step on a pebble or something thats obviously dangerous...
