WTF rust spots?

Ok well im detailing my dads 2002 Rl which i never have before. :o

I clayed it and noticed dots of rust everywhere, mostly on the rear bumper. It was able to come off but i had to put pressure on the clay bar. Should i not do that in case i burn the paint?

What causes these spots? I never seen them before.

No wont burn it. Might scratch though if you don't keep the surface well lubed.

I will bet that they are rail dust marks. When cars are shipped via rail, hot pieces of metal can get kicked up. They land on your paint and eat into the surface where they sit and rust. It is not your car rusting, it is the tiny metal shards that are. The complete process to get them out is very difficult. It consists of using Acids or Bases ( I forget which) to oxidize the spots and eat the junk out of the paint. Then a neutralizer and wash again and then cay the stubborn area.

I had to do this to a bunch of whits cars when I worked at the dealer. Paint in the doopa...

Wouldnt you think the dealer would have cleaned that up before we picked it up.

Oh well most of it came off anyways with claying.

And Actually I don't know if these are all rail dust. On my white CLS these seem to reappear with time, so I don't know what else could cause them. nevertheless, claybar will get them out.

Its just stuff picked up on the road. My father has a White TL-S and it happens once in a while, mostly in winter. The stuff is a pain to get rid of, but it will come off. He usually just waxes the bumper and has to use a little more force.
