WTF?! LOST TO A GOLF?!

Yeah I'm NOT kidding!

Some yellow VW Golf(or something like that...it was a really small car) with a huge ol' exhaust pulls up next to me. I figure I'd teach the guy a lesson, you know? 'Don't mess w/ the S!' VSA-off, drop to D3 I'm ready to rock. As soon as the light hits green, I mash the pedal. Suddenly this kids half a car ahead of me! "Okay its cool I'll catch up!" All the way to 60 or 65 I raced him when I decided to shut down and he was still 1/2 a car length! Pissed the fuck out of me.

You guys think this guy was turbo'd or SC'd? Spraying? It was consistent the whole way...My nose was about in the middle of his car.

I can't blame it on the actuator either...I just got it fixed.

*sigh*...moral of the story : Watch out for bastard yellow VW Golfs.

Funny that you say that....

Just last night, I raced a Golf (had VR6 badge on it) that was kinda Goldish in color.

The guy had a turbo in it. I could hear it build boost and then blow off pressure thru the blow off valve. Sounded sweet.

It was a really nice car.

It's called a GTI

They look just like the Golf except that it's got 2 doors instead of 4. Those things have balls and are pretty light. They cost about 23,000 new. You can get v6 with about 170 hp but the weight of the car (or lack thereof) makes up for it.

The guy you raced probably had some mods in addition to that and hence the speed.

The I4t GTI's have the same engine in the FWD Audi TT's. They're actually the same engine, that is to say not the least bit detuned. However, the GTI unit is underrated to give peace-of-mind to the potential TT owner.

I am uncertain as to this engine's relation to the higher-output TT engine. It would not surprise me if they were one and the same w/differnt engine management and maybe a slightly bigger turbo.

Don't you remember seeing that engine on Ward's 10 best engines list?

Chip it, make a whole bunch of boost, and the car will easily surpass the output of its VR6 brethern.

Note: The VR6 badge is the equivalent of the "Type S" badge in Acuradom. However, in Tom's case its was more of a red herring.

On vwvortex.com in the 1.8T forum, there is a report of a APR StageIII GTI doing 13.0 @ 107mph. Keep in mind that a GTI weighs all of 2800 pounds and can be chipped to 196hp and 240 ft-lbs (at the crank) with a $500 ECU flash upgrade. The 1.8T tends to generate more torque in the low-to-mid rpm ranges. From what I understand, the cat-back exhausts extend the plateau further up the rev range, similar to what headers do for the J32. Bottom line: no shame in keeping up with one .

all you need is a new chip on the 1.8 and they are at audi tt like levels. That engine can be modded like crazy too.

Yep..Those Golf are pretty fast..that was my previous car before I bought the Acura..I owned a GTI VR6, and boy, I had fun racing in that car... I had Air intake, cams, exhaust and it was chipped.

I was able to just "go" with that car. Those cars have 174HP stock..and well into the 200HP after mods..the car has a lot of Torque, and like e harmon says, they are a light car, only weighing around 2800 lbs.

That's why I liked racing other cars (within it's catagory) with the GTI VR6 because no one expected what kind of power that car had...By the time the other cars I was racing realized what hit them, I was gone....

I thought that the Type S can take of on this car...I feel like the Type S has more power..but I guess the weight ratio with the power is greater than the Type S??

Anyways..becareful if you race the GTI VR6, V.W. calls them the "pocket Rocket" because they are pretty quick. Like DtEW says the GTI VR6 symbol is equivalent to the Type S badge on our cars. The GTI VR6 are all stick shift as well.

If it was more goldish in color than yellow I would say it was my friend Eric. He has a Gti Vr6 w/ optional fart pipe but with a twist. Jackson Racing equiped. Funny thing is with as much money as he's spent on mod's he can barely beat me in th 1/8th by half a car length. almost exactly as you describe.

The GTI VR6 also has 181 lb-ft @3200 rpm to go along with the 174 bhp. That's what kills everyone off the line.
