Went to get gas and the damn guy put in 91 instead of 93 which i told him to put in. Will this affect anything, or its no big deal?

 

I thought the manual recommends 91 octane anyways, doesn't it? Either way, 91 octane is perfect for our cars so you've got nothing to worry about.

 

I've occassionally run 87 and 89 in mine. No worries. We cant even get 93 in CA!

 

yeah be lucky if you can get 93. 91 is excellent. I ran 89 and 87 for well over 6 months... No probs, just not as peppy acceleration.

 

Move out of New Jersey to a real state where you can pump your own gas. I really never understood that.

Nothing wrong with it. The ECU will retard the engine timing to compensate for the lower octane fuel.

Jersey's anal about it ... in fact, it's illegal to pump your own gas in that state. personally, I don't want anybody letting gas run down the side of my cars.

 

it's no problem. once i had to put 85 in the car because the light was on and i was in the middle of nowhere (i can't even think of which state i was even in) and that was all they had. they must have run out of the 89 or 91, the only other choice they had. i put in couple of gallons and off i went. nothing seemed wrong, but i did baby it to the next gas station.

 

Man, we don't even get 93 octane here in LA anymore...

 

We pay more for self-pump 91 than Oregonian's do for 92 pumped for them.

Yup, Oregon still has full "let me drip gas all over the side of your car" service.

 

I live in nj and love the fact that I can sit in my car and dust the dashboard, change my CD's, make a call or anything else while someone else gets out in the cold pumps my gas . I always go to the same Mobil station and they NEVER drip ANY gas down the side or wash my windows with the dirty squeegee......or if I want, I can cross the bridge to Pennsylvania and pay 11 cents more a gallon and have to get out an pump it myself. NJ keep it illegal to pump your own!

 

Gas is cheaper in PA as long as you stay away from the places right off the interstates.
That’s probably the ones you’re comparing to.

I live close to the border and drive into Jersey quite frequently.
I try to always do it with a FULL tank of gas because I prefer to pump my own.
Too much can go wrong with an inconsiderate and underpaid gas jockey.
Everything from scratching the paint to not tightening the cap correctly.
And the dreading overfill !!!

You guys are so mistrusting I love NJ pump gas for you service. When I lived in NYC I used to get gas in Jersey cause it was cheaper, but always loved not having to pump it. Rickm is right there's so much you can do while waiting. I never had any problems with it.

And 87, or 89 gas is fine. The car will perform a little worse but there's no problem with it.

 

yup, my GF lives in the ny/nj border and everytime I go over here house, I drive right over the boarder and fill it up, ex: Mobil 93 in Ny $1.97 ----- NJ $1.75 and I sit in my car and the attendents freezes their ass off!! No complaints from me

I am probably jinxing myself again but I've never ever had a problem, not even a lost gas cap. The prices I was comparing to are both equal distance for me in small towns on opposite sides of the Deleware river, both Mobil stations, so this case is apples to apples. I am sure there's much cheaper gas to be had in both states but I'd rather pay a few more cents locally than have to drive a distance to save a few.

 

I just don't understand why it is a law in NJ that you can't pump your own gas. Like do the gas attendants get some sort of special training that they know how to pump gas better than the average driver? My friend in college did it in high school. Made $5.50 an hour doing it. I just don't see the point. Almost every other state lets you do it. When I was in NJ visiting friends and family twice this 15 year old kid who was pumping my gas dripped all over my car. What's the point?

 

I agree that it's a stupid law, think about how many attendants put their life in danger in bad areas late at night. We also have another stupid gas law - attendants can't wear short pants, I don't think it's enforced, but it is a law.

That's not actually so bad for up North. I expected you guys to be paying a lot more like the Californians and their $2.00+ gas prices.

 

The cheapest in south FL I have found 93 is $1.61.

Its $1.66 in Ellicott City for 93

$1.89 where I work in Bethesda right outside of DC

 

Here Houston average is $1.30

 

yeah but you only get 91 octane we get 93... for $.50 cheaper.

 

$1.56 yesterday, but noticed it went up to $1.61 today .... must be getting ready for the Thanksgiving gouging.

 

fuck man....our premium 91 in CA is avg between $1.95 - $2.10 right now...fuck California lol. By the way, is it cool if i run 89 gas in it for the time being rather than 91?

when i was drivin to NY from IL we went through NJ and got gas so cheap. and we got to pump it ourselves? it was like 1.50 for 91 it was crazy.. it was in the mid of nowhere pretty much, i think it was kinda like a truck stop...here in IL its around 1.999 now for 93 cheapest ive seen it has been 1.67 it fluxuates so much

 

89 octane is fine. The ECU will compensate for it.


I hate having others pump gas for me. I would much rather do it myself so I can be more careful.

During the Black-Out 2003, there was one Mobil gas station operating on power generators. I waited in line for 2 hours... but that's another story. Well, the guy at the pump won't let me do it myself for some weird reason. And he was leaning on my car. I asked him politely, "Could you please refrain from leaning on my car?" He was dumbfounded, with a look on his face, "Dude, it's not like you drive a Ferrari."

I just don't want to deal with that kind of thing.

 

"Premium" gas can be 91 octane or 93 octane -- it all depends on altitude. Premium in Florida is 93 octane. It is probably 91 in Denver.

From the Department of Energy:

"Premium Gasoline: Gasoline having an antiknock index, i.e., octane rating, greater than 90. Note: Octane requirements may vary by altitude.

Note: Gasoline sales are reported by grade in accordance with their classification at the time of sale. In general, automotive octane requirements are lower at high altitudes. Therefore, in some areas of the United States, such as the Rocky Mountain States, the octane ratings for the gasoline grades may be 2 or more octane points lower."

All you folks that complain "I can't get 93 in this town" need to stop worrying. The reason you can't get it there is because YOU DONT NEED IT THERE.

 

I was paying 1.59 not too long ago for 94 octane at sonoco

 

Currently in Chicago premium is over $2.00 as well

 

I paid $1.57 for Exxon 93 octane today.

Three things:

1. Closing on $2.00 for 93 octane here, and they say it will go up in the spring.

2. Just took the CLS6 in for an oil change, and while I am waiting, about four guys push in a new gen TL. ??????? They told me the new owner somehow managed to fill it up with DIESEL FUEL!

3. When the wright brothers first flew, their fuel was 26 octane, and the engine developed about 16 hp. They calculated they needed 12 to fly.
