wornout/color change rubber around sun roof
I notice white spots and appears to be wearing out on the rubber around the sun roof. I used ArmorAll to bring back the color somewhat, It's not wax on it. Has anyone else notice this, it looks like a bad quality rubber was used ? Someone on the TL board has notived this also. http://www.acura-tl.com/forum/showth...threadid=16427

I am also having the same problem. It is turning white and it really starting to bug me. Are there ways to restore the black color? Or do you just have to take it and get the whole thing redone?

Same thing here. Using tire dressing makes it black for a week at best. Not a good solution. I'm taking my car in for some warranty work tomorrow and will ask about it then.

I have applied a coat of ZAINO to mine whenever I wax the car and I haven’t noticed this as a problem.
That’s just another reason I am such a ZAINO freak, because you can wax all the black trim and you will never have problems with “graying” of the rubber like you get with most WAX.

i've used my Zymol Protectant, and it's working great on it...keeps the rubber soft and in good condition for a year now...i accidentally stumbled on it getting rid of some wax buildup on the rubber.

Well, I just got back from my service appointment. I asked about the discoloration on the sunroof seal, they all knew exactly what I meant, but the best suggestion they had was, "Uh...I dunno, Um...put Armorall on it...?"
I asked the obligatory question of whether or not the discoloration was any sign of the quality of the seal degrading, and they assured me it was not. Yeah, wonder what they'll say if it ends up leaking
I also finally got the squeaking problem of the sunroof addressed. My sunroof doesn't squeak anymore, but it makes more of a ticking sound. Basically, I think this tape they put on (which looks like hell IMO), made the size of the hole smaller, thus holding the seal tighter. I don't think the tape, which doesn't feel like teflon to me, does anything to suppress the noise - Wayne or Jens, care to tell me how I can make sure the dealer put the right stuff on?
Urgh. I guess this deserves a post all it's own, but I have to call them tomorrow because they didn't correctly fix two of the problems I brought it in for, which means I get to hear more, "Uh...I dunno....Um...wanna bring it back...?" and have to spend another morning dropping the damn thing off, driving the complete POS Integra loaner (I know, I'm lucky they give them), and picking it back up.
Gee, hope second time's the charm.
I'm never buying an Acura again. Even if the other manufacturers suck as much as Acura does, at least I'll get jobbed by a new bunch of people.

Shawn,
I put so many coats of Zaino on my car (paint, windows, rubber, and plastic) that I started getting a slightly gray film on the rubber. When I talked to Sal Zaino about this, he said that one could do this, but the Zaino SHOULD only really be applied to the perfectly smooth surfaces.
Just food for though -- I actually use his rubber treatment on the tires, but use the Z2 on the sunroof rubber.

I notice that all you guys, except for EricL, are in the High Humidity area's of the US, cause I don't have that with mine !
California=low humidity !
Any comments ?

ARE you using Zaino -- cause the rubber itself is not gray, it is just the 15 coats of Zaino leaving a film-like coat over the rubber. It actualy seems most visible right after a Z2 job.
I was considering switching to 303 protectant on the sunroof rubber and all non-smooth surfaces -- so I could eat up even more time caring for the car (j/k)

Eric,
First off, no, I use Finish First products. My Honda service rep. says that BMW has an expensive "lube" they use for the squeaking etc....that is what my Honda dealership uses on my Accord Coupe ! This is a fucked up design that they know about and I don't understand WHY Honda/Acura doesn't change the design !!!! So I buy the CLS and the same shit over again.....

On my S2000, honda recommends a product called Shin Etzu grease on all of the rubber seals (there are a LOT of seals) Mine look great after two years. You might give it a try.

I was just saying that if you happen to do it accidentally, your not screwed like you would be if you were using most other waxes.

and by the way, that seal is only put there to stop "most" of the water and for windnoise, thats why there are "drains" in the sunroof to channel the water that goes past the seal down the a and c pillars - although depending on how tight the seal fits very little or no water may get past it
no two cars are built the same
