Windshield Washer Fluid Reservoir
Windshield Washer Fluid Reservoir
I just noticed something:
I was checking fluids during an oil change this weekend and noticed that the washer fluid level was down to the middle portion of the spout segment. I thought this was weird as I really haven't used the wipers recently.
I filled up to the tiptop, like I always do, and I noticed that the spout was leaking. It seems that the washer fluid reservoir is really comprised of three pieces - 1) the reservoir, 2) a corrugated spout extension, and 3) the top cap piece.
I noticed my leak was from the connection between the top cap piece and the corrugated piece, no leaks from below.
Upon further inspection, I noticed that these two pieces are only pushed together -- there doesn't appear to be a tight coupling or gasket. I guess I've been lucky because it's never leaked before, and I always have filled the spout to the tiptop.
There's hardly anything on the washer fluid reservoir in the Helm manual -- only how to remove and reinstall it, and then a few pages on the electronics and pump. It doesn't state whether or not the corrugated section is merely a conduit to fill the reservoir below, or also intended to be filled with and store fluid.
Do others fill the reservoir all the way up to the cap (ie: fill the corrugated tube and top piece), or only the reservoir below? Do others have it leak if you fill to the tiptop?

I noticed the SAME leakage a few days ago.. after 34kmiles
.. Unless it's psychological - you do not get much more fluid by topping it off.. so I just stopped. It is ironic they haven't put the gasket or something. Perhaps plastic deforms, since in 3 years it NEVER leaked before...
