Why would the 5-60mph times be slower then the 0-60mph?

I remember checking out a car magazine that was reviewing a ferrari 360 modena, a Z8 and an aston martin. I looked over the times and 0-60mph was quicker then the 5-60mph. You would think that the 5-60 would be faster. Any ideas on why this is?

Because of lack of traction, i.e. to get max performance most cars need slight wheelspin which cannot be attained going 5mph. Also, when going 5mph, the engine is typically bogged down at low rpms, where a launch will allow a higher rpm start. etc...

We had a discussion about this before...

Car and Driver added the 5 mph to 60 mph test a few years back when awd high horsepower sports cars became popular (3000GT VR4, AWD Eclipse, 911 Turbo). They found you could get sub 5 second 0-60 times in a VR4 by revving to the moon and dropping the clutch. But, they figured that people who actually owned the car would probably not be so dumb with their $40K machine. Starting from 5 mph is a easily repeatable condition that simulates not being able to drop the clutch. The "real" time that an owner would see on the street should fall somewhere between the 0-60 and the 5-60 times.

EXACTLY!! 0-60 people just drop the clutch and just try to get the quickest time possible. but ofcourse you can't do this in auto unless you brake torque which is also bad.
