Why take oil to the dealer?

I've noticed some of you take your own oil to the dealer when you get the oil changed. Why?? Don't they use Honda/Mobile oil at the dealer?

Most dealers use whatever is in the Drum they buy, and it's never synthetic..

Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you..

If you really are that concerned about the dealer "stealing" the "good" oil, and putting the "bulk" stuff, go find a "quick lube"/"Jiffy Lube"/or local gas station where you can watch from the back of the work bay.

No more guessing (Just pick up a Honda (or your favorite filter brand) and your favorite oil) and watch them put the stuff in.

BTW -- most of the dealers I've used in my life have bought oil in bulk. (I also know of a case where our family’s Mercedes was NOT touched down in Orange County, So Cal -- they left in the ALL of the previous parts and did NOT change the oil for a total charge of $450.00) (Sorry to feed your paranoia...)

It is cheaper to bring you own oil and sometimes they do not carry the oil you want.

What is a good weight for our cars? I drive in SoCal and know little to nothing about oil weight. I did, however, buy 4 quarts 10W40 Mobil One last time I went to the dealer. I contemplated 20W50, but wouldn't know if it would make a difference or not.

Also, next time I go in for service, should I buy the Mobil One oil filter as well?

Mobil 1 5W30 if you have a CL/CLS. There is some confusion about the TL needing 5W20 (or 5W30).

I bring 5-quarts as I always have the filter changed.

Oil Change Spec:

4.2 US qt. (without filter)
4.6 US qt. (with filter)

Or, how about changing the oil yourself. I've never changed oil before the GP or the CL-S and it's very easy on our cars. It takes me 30 minutes tops.

5W-30 is the weight recommended for the CL, right? That's what's recommended for my Legend. So what does the dealer use? They use 10W40 for some reason. It's written right there on the service invoice.

Well now I'm confused. I thought we didn't change our oil for 7500 miles because we use synthetic oil in our engines. But, if the dealer is putting in regular oil isn't that going to damage the engine?

There are two service schedules. One for normal (oil change recommended every 7,500 miles) and one for severe (oil change recommended every 3,750 miles), using dinosaur oil. Synthetic recommendations vary from the same as dinosaur oil up to twice as long (I use mobile 1, normal use, and change at 10,000 miles). YMMV (this time it's really true..).

If you change it yourself, don't forget to stop by the dealer and get a new washer..

I did, and paid .25 cents a washer, just to realize they're metal washers and don't really need to be replaced, EVERY oil change! The one on the car had no disfiguration or damage and was completely reusable. I think maybe every other or third change.
