Shop?

Oh no... I don't own a shop by any stretch! I just like to modify cars... and this turbo kit might be something I could market if somebody wants it - not a business venture... just as a hobby. I'll do all the install, but I'll still have to get a 3rd party to manufacture the manifold... I can't do that part of it. It's just a matter of installing everything... copy my manifold... make any mods needed and let it rip!

March is a good time-frame. I'll definately have my car done before then... you can check it out and if its something you want to do... it can be done!

It will take about 2 weeks to get all the parts (turbo, intercooler, fuel-system components and other misc. stuff). Then... 1 weekend to install all this stuff and 1 week to get the manifold manufactured and finish the install.

But this is putting the cart before the horse... I need to finish my darn kit first! I'll do an extensive write-up with pictures and stuff when its done... probably in a month, I hope! I had estimated end-of-Jan when I started this thing.. hopefully I can stick to that schedule. If you go ask someone to make a one-off kit in a week and install it.. they'd charge a good $8K+, so I think I'll take my time and save a few $$.

It is beginning to be a hard sell to my wife now considering we will be soon trading in her 328i for an X5 4.4i (no SS in the MDX killed that less costly possibility). Not to mention the other preparations. I'm just trying to come up with a compelling argument for needing the SC but I do feel a bit selfish pursuing it now considering...

As for the power gains, a simple way to look at it would be like this; every gears acceleration, no matter where you are at in the rev band, would be about the same as a stock vehicles next lower gear. In other words, an SC'd 3rd gear pull will be about the same as a stock 2nd gear pull.
Just go for it Scalbert Wow, imagine 4th gear feeling like 3rd !!

Id rather have another car with that money...

I'm getting an X5 next, and an engagement ring this year for my girl, so dropping $5K for an AUTO just doesn't make sense to me.

The car's suspension could NEVER handle well with that kinda power.
it barely handles with the intake and headers...

probably cause 90% of the people own auto's and our, auto's just happen to have a weak ass tranny.

If the tranny was bulit proof like the GM's then Im sure more people would of gotten it.

Auto

Anything's possible. There are two things to consider with the auto:

(1) Tranny is MUCH bigger than the 6spd... but with the battery relocated to the trunk... it shouldn't be a problem. Plus, a T3/T4 should fit fine. The placement might be slightly different.
(2) The auto trannies have a issue with breaking... and I have no idea how the extra hp will affect the transmissions. As Comptech has suggested, a tranny-cooler might work, but there's no guarantee!

Borrowing is a no-no

Given that the time IS a "borrower's market"... I still can't condone
borrowing money for a highly depreciative product. I am sure the S/C will lose at least 40% of its value the moment it is installed. Yes... you arn't paying interest... but you had better make sure you have it paid off before interest starts!

Put aside a few hundred bucks every paycheck for 'entertainment' and before you know it you will have enough.

After lengthy discussion my SC purchasing plans have been put on hold for the imediate future. Got to remodel a bathroom and bedroom along with purchase an MDX (now back in the selection) or an X5.

Maybe after those are out of the way I might make do it. But I have a funny feeling my priorities will be changed once the twins arrive.

Money isn’t the biggest issue for me not doing it.
Having the engine last 100,000 PLUS miles is.

Engine life

I don't think 100K miles is a problem at these mild boost levels. Your driving style probably has more to do with it than the S/C itself! Regular maintenance and a 'watchful eye' should be good enough to take care of the motor.

Engine 'wear' will be accelerated... but 100K wouldn't be a problem.

Maybe true, but I want my CLUTCH to last 100K too.
With that much power and FWD you’re going to have to slip the clutch for effective launching.
Doing that is VERY bad for clutch life.

So, this may be a stupid question, BUT,

Even though it is made by Comptech and whatnot, I guess since it's a supercharger it voids the factory warranty completely, right?

Even if it's installed at a dealership?

How about this is a wild guess on my part ???
YOU have no idea what will happen.

We’ve had people report here of warranty issues from suspension MODS or even a CAI.
I can just imagine the issues the first guy is going to have when he blows a head gasket or something with a supercharger.

NOT ME thank you.

Well i think it all comes down to your relationship with the dealer. If you buy it from them and they install it with the agreement that they'll take care of you, then i'd do it.

Also, i agree with Mattg, you only live once. ENJOY the power !!

You know i was just thinking about one more idea concerning the SC for the 5AT. Maybe after they're available the dealer will install them and sell it new like they have with headers etc. Then you could get the newer tranny if it's true and the SC installed with no warranty questions. If they sell you a brand new car with SC the warranty would have to apply to everything it was sold with, correct ??

It will be up to the individual dealers to make the call about the warranty. But IMO, the power train warranty should be voided as this is a serious power enhancer. But also IMO, the car can handle it fine.

In my opinion if you want speed NOS is the way to go $5000 bucks for 50hp F THAT if you want that HP then get the bottle and it will delever it clean for under $1000 or less and you could pull it out when it was time for warranty work!!! plus spank the S/C charger silly

Personally I'd rather drop the $2500 on the 3.5L upgrade and keep it all motor.

But, since I'm moving into a new house in May and the wife needs a new car this year... I won't be doing anything like that soon. Probably better off anyway
