Why do States put Limits on Tints

I know that most states put limits on the amount of tint that you have on your windows, the front's especially. I know that the Law here in CT is 35%, but why do states regulate this? Is it to protect the driver so that they have decent visibility at night, or is it something else?

I have always followed these laws, but never understood why they are necessary.

Thanks...oh and no flames please, I'm just curious

to protect a cop who is coming up to your car at night or during the day. he needs to see inside to see whether you have a weapon or not.

yeah that's their excuse but its pretty flimsy. The legal limit on the front two windows is something like 70% in CA. I had 50% on one car and anyone could see it. Yet it was illegal. But you can legallly paint your back windows black. As if a back seat passenger couldn't shoot the cop just as easily.

Unless you're living at the equator, shit doesn't need to be pitch black. 20% is plenty dark for most places. It's 35% here in MA/NH.

I agree with ya, but its so damn hot down here. My tint has def. helped with the interior of the car keeping a little cooler

Where in fairfield county do you live nikon? I lived in Ridgefield...had 5% on the rear, and 20% on the sides and visor. Never had a problem with it....and was pulled over many times.

I don't think they really enforce that law much...and if you ever need to pass emissions or registration or whatever it is when they actually check....= 20 bucks got my guy to say it was legit.

In Washington, DC if the DMV inspectors notice ANY tint on your windows, they will fail your car. I used to have 50% on my last car and got it passed without problems, but they are assholes about tint. Technically, they have to fail factory tinted cars (Municipal Regulations don't excuse factory AS3). The regulations were written because some cop was shot and couldn't see the driver, so they banned tint completely and ALL tinting business in DC. You won't get pulled over in DC if your rear window is light, so I have 35% on rear, 20% on sides.

We have two Land Rovers, with 20% rears, and 35% sides. They failed our cars front AND rear. If I were to replace the rear windows (AS2) with factory AS3 windows (which are about the same-20%), they would not fail the car (even though they technically should fail the vehicle).

DC sucks for window tint-

The legal limit in California is no tint! Has always been no tint. I got enough tickets for tint there.

if i was a cop i would want to be able to see into a car i was approaching. most of the regulation is probably bs but this is important for their safety

So when it's dark out he can see a brother driving so he can pull him over to profile him.

If he's pullin' him over BECAUSE he's brotha, he's already profiled. Hell, we all profile every damn day. It's just a new term to describe impressions based on prejudices/preconceived notions.

Or go to your doc and complain about skin irratation after being exposed to direct sunlight even through your OEM windows. Or if you take medication like some antibiotics and thyroid medications, they can make you more "light sensitive."
