The last thing I did was fill the radius rod bushings with urethane. It helped a bit. I then sandwiched a couple of washers between the bushings and this helped some more. There has been some improvement with the wheel hop but I can still make it hop if I pop the clutch with a lot of revs. It is a lot easier to launch though and I don't notice the wheel hop so much. I'm not surprised by it like before. It's much more tolerable. I wouldn't say it's totally cured though. The next thing to do would be some sort of brace that solidly locates the lower arm. I have also seen a solid ball joint for older CRXs that can replace the radius rod bushings with a solid connection. This might be worth a try. One side benefit is that the front really grabs going into a corner. I can't really get the stock tires to squeal around a corner any more. I really need to compare it to a car with stock suspension to tell how much improvement there really is. It's enough that I'm not that much bothered by the hop anymore. That may change when I put the summer tires back on. I also filled the motor mounts with urethane which also firmed things up.

hey Mike, while you're at it you may want to clean up pg. 21 in the unichip possibilities thread.

Have any of you thought about having solid mounts machined?

You mean motor mounts? Solid would be pretty rough. Filling the stock mounts makes them much stiffer but leaves them fairly compliant.

I would like to try these radius rod bearings for the radius rod bushings.

Yep. I friend of mine swapped his out for solids in his GTI, a lil rougher but not bad. He says the benifits are worth it. It's the hardcore option if you really want the performance.

I drove in a solid 1.8T GTI and it was miserable bro, the car shook so bad on the roll out

Depends which motormount you were driving in. My VW MKIV Jetta has VW Motorsport mounts, and they don't shake up to bad, it's barely noticeable unless you drive the car daily or are the owner I have another set of motormounts in my MKIII GTi, and that sucker shakes your balls off, but i guess when twisting it around cones, the balls even out...

I dunno if it matters, but his 89 is just sporting the 2.0 16v. This is his project "toy" car (in addition to his daily driver MR2-T and his 240sx) so he doesn't have to deal with it all the time either.

You sure the shaking wasn't something else?

Nope, my MKIII has a 1.8L 16V, i built it from the ground up with parts donated from my 83 GTi. I know every rattle, squeek and vibration in the car. The current mounts cause the bad vibration, I've swapped them out with OEM ones, and the vibration ceases to exist when I did... but the wheel hop is present when punching it. I guess it's a give and lose situation.

I don't see why no company has made mounts for our cars, especially with the amount of power transfered to the wheels.

If it wasn't my daily driver, I'd have some solids machined. I have access to a machine shop, but I'd just have some contacts to it. I doubt many peeps here would be in for a solid mount.

PS: the comment about something else was directed at CLpower, you snuck your post in there before me. ;D

Jen's suggestion was to use urethane radius rod bushings.

Wheel hop is where the wheels bounce up and down when they loose traction. There is a decent explaination here as well as a description of the motor mount mod I did. http://www.raktron.com/misc/mt.htm

Well one thing is that most of the CLs are autos and the auto uses the vacuum controled mounts front and back so it would be a completely different animal. The 6 speed has one large conventional mount in the back and 2 trans mounts that could be replaced with solid ones. I'm pretty sure the tranny mounts could be filled on the auto cars which might make a difference.

The vacuum mounts are just to lessen the vibrations even more at lower RPMS, correct? I don't see any reason why you cannot replace them as well.

For front wheel drive cars, unfortunately, wheel hop is very much an inherent problem due to the tremendous weight transfer to the rear wheels when you come out of the hole. You can reduce some hop by mod or go easy on the pedal initially.
