Where did the TL's two doors go?

Just something I have been wondering...

The CL shares a lot with the 2nd gen TL. They have the same engines and transmissions and even have the same overall length (192 inches).

So if we assume the engine compartments are generally identical, how did they redistribute the CL's proportions to make the TL's two doors and backseat go away? I've been searching for internet specs but can't really find any, and nobody in my family has a 2nd gen TL for me to compare with anymore.

The obvious answer is that the front passenger section has been enlarged at the expense of the rear, but the CL doesn't feel any roomier up front than the TL. Or maybe my mind is playing tricks on me as it has been a few years since I rode in a 2nd gen TL. The backseat of the CL is definitely more cramped. Is the trunk larger than the TL too?

I find it somewhat amusing that Acura would make a two door that is as long as their four door.

And two door Honda coupes have been as big as their sedan counterparts before. The Accord coupe and Legend coupe especially the 2nd generation. After all, these cars still have to be somewhat practical. Now a Prelude backseat on the other hand..

Seems rear hip room is the big compromise in the CL.

Is this saying a base cl weighs 3485 ?

2003 TL vs. 2003 CL Dimensions:

3510 lb (Base) vs. 3485 lb
3554 lb (Type S) vs. 3525lb (3461 in 6MT)

That would be only 26lbs more than a manual.
I thought their was a larger weight differnce.

but looking at the numbers it looks like a cl type s auto vs manual has a bigger lb difference of 64lbs.I always thought people were saying their was over 100lb difference.

Am I reading his numbers correct? Are they correct ?

So as I suspected, the front passenger compartment is nearly identical.

The wheelbase is shorter by almost 2" and so is the rear legroom. They must have placed the rear seats right near the rear wheel intrusions which accounts for the decreased hip room too. This would allow them to run additional chassis and rear strut bracing and merge it into the seat area so as not to have random braces crossing through the trunk. Acura did say the CL chassis was strengthened over the TL.

Thanks for the figures.

Yea, i dont know how thats possible. When i did the swap on my car there was well over a 150lb difference in trans weight alone. In the end there was so much of a difference the front end with lowering springs sat almost an inch higher.

Where your legs behind your head?

This is a 5th gen for reference and by far the roomiest of the bunch...

I had a 4G Prelude. Only once did someone ride in the backseat. Their legs were on one side, their body on another.
