Whats the safest way to buy from a pirvate party?
Well i found the car i want but the guy lives in MI. So i dont mind driving there to get it and bring it back. But i never bought from a used party before, so whats the safe way to do this?
Should i just get a cashiers check and meet up with him. Then have him sign over the title? How do i know if the title is real? Hes 50 years old, so im sure he wont screw me over... but still.
Anything else i should look out for?
Oh and he has the title, not the lender.

Cost Drivers!!!!
check the service records and make sure to call the place where he got the car serviced at....make sure they've actually serviced that car. Check the VIN #s according to their records and compare to his etc., See if you can schedule an appointment at a local dealership to give it the once over before you walk away.

Have you ran a CarFax report?
Generally, it's pay the seller the money and they sign the title over. I have no idea how to tell if the title is fake... Especially in a state where I've never seen a title. Indiana, no problemo...
I'm interested to see what others say about this...

deposite the money in your checking account then pay with a visa convience check ,visa does protect purchases but im not sure if there's a limit ...also you might look into if there's title insurance like with a house

i don't know how it is in IL, but I know in PA, it's easy to get an illegitimate title.
but i think if you meet the guy and he does have all the service records (and they don't all look like they were printed on the same day), and he has the registration and stuff, and he's not "ghetto" or seems shady, it's probably alright.
i worked in an insurance office that did title transfers in PA, and we were involved in 2 big stolen car rings. one was out of florida (cars stolen from there, then illegally titled in PA), and the other one consisted of a guy dealing with expensive cars (MBs, Benzes, Lexii, etc.). He stole new (untitled) cars and got PennDOT to title them as used cars with low mileage and sold them (through our office...there's no way we could know the car was stolen considering he had the title in his name).
in the end (after they busted up the rings), a lot of people lost their cars and got no refund because PennDOT didn't realize they were processing and delivering titles and registrations for stolen cars until months later.

first of all..run it through the carfax..
at least u know some history of the car
my brother had one experience about almost
bought a salvage car..
i called him and asked him for the vin number
from the car he was about to buy as he went to see
buyer and test drove the car
and i was home..so..he gave me the vin number
i ran through the carfax..and came back that car had
major accident..
the owner still insisted no accident at all
i told my brother to walk away from that car
......
anyway..if the car fax result comes back fine..
u need to test drive it yourself..
touch here ..touch there...see if there is any traces of welding in the engine bay and trunk..
see if there is any factory sticker on every part of the car..
or bring a professional with u...or your friend whom knows cars well..
and good luck..
i bought my jeep from private party too..
it does not have any accident..
but u can not prevent from small problems due to old cars...

Call the State of Michigan, Secretary of State, and ask them.
And if you're going to Marquette, MI this time of year, you had better bring your winter gear, and keep your fingers crossed for clear weather! It starts early up daer eh!
