what's the optimal speed to drive for most mileage?

i have to drive 120 miles per day for work and i was wondering what the optimal speed to get the most mileage out of 2001 and up CL... i usually drive between 70-80+ on the highway but get only 350+ miles out of full tank.. am i driving too fast?

I think that's pretty good.. My daily route is about 50/50 between highway, and streets. I get about 250-275 per tank of gas, depending how I drove that week. But when I travel long distance, than I get about 350 - 365 per tank.

If you get some good spark plugs, and a cold air intake, and you should notice an even better MPG.

350 miles pertank is great. You would hit 400 easy if you went 55mph. Do you have the 6speed or the auto?

Top gear with rpm around 2000 should give good milage. Unfortunately that probably equals 60mph.

A/C also sucks some MPG but I've heard that driving with the windows open at freeway speeds do as well (increased drag) - so it's probably OK to leave A/C on while on the open roads.

55 seems about right for 400+ per tank. I've done over 400 on a tank with the ac off, doing about 75 for 1200 miles straight.

I just filled up yesterday with only 235 miles for the 14 gallons!

All city driving in this fun heatwave.

The dichotomy between city and highway mileage has always amazed me.

I can't belive how bad my gas mileage is. Never over 250 pertank. It is over 110 every day though.

Hey Nashua whats your mileage at when you hit empty then? I typically get 200 miles at the halfway mark, then suddenly 40 miles later my "empty" light comes on

I believe I read somewhere that the optimal cruising speed is 70MPH...the tach should sit excatly at 2k RPM. If I want to save gas, I cruise control it at 70. The most I've ever gotten out of a tank was 400 something miles (I have them logged everytime I get gas if you want the exact miles/gallons I've used). I think the key to saving gas (other than keeping it in 5th all the time of course) is to make sure you DONT change RPMs very often more than just the speed itself.

I'm not a big fan of our gas gauges either.
I usually fill up when I need 14-15 gallons of gas. I almost always get 350 out of a tank of gas, and once in a while, over 400.
Once in a while, I'll only get 320. My worst MPG was 22.3. The best I've ever had was a smidge over 31. I'm very happy if I get 26mpg the way I drive.
I do probably 60/40 Hwy/City. WOT it at least once a day, it seems. Drive about 80mph on the hwy. The car is so smooth doing 2200rpm in top gear at that speed. I love that I get brute force acceleration when I want it, and then a silky smooth and quiet ride at comfortable hwy speeds. Gotta love Honda/Acura.

If I do a lot of HW... I hit the half tank mark at 200-225 miles... 110 miles later I hit the Empty light.. So, that is 335 miles. I can drive a good 40 miles ( for a total of 375 miles) on the light and still have 1 Galon left!!!!

does Acura use non-linear gas gauges or something? My Vigor was the same way, so is my friends RSX

The horsepower required to maintain a constant speed increases with approximately the cube of the speed. This relationship is mostly driven by aerodynamic drag. Mechanical losses (geartrain, tire rolling resistance, etc.) increase with speed too, but at a more gradual rate, and are usually overshadowed by aerodynamic drag. Since most engines consume more fuel when operated at higher rpm (at higher output), the bottom line is: for maximum fuel economy, go as slowly as your engine will function in top gear. If you're close to running out of fuel, you can probably cruise at very low rpm (1500??), and maximize your chances of making it to the next gas station.

Exactly. In top gear, the literal optimum speed for maximum mileage is between 40-45 MPH. This is due to wind drag. Wind drag varies EXPONENTIALLY with vehicle velocity, meaning the faster you go, your mileage gets increasingly worse... and quickly. Since no one has the patience to drive 45 MPH everywhere, manufacturers put overdrive gears in cars so they would use less fuel at higher speeds. Now today, people drive even faster and think they are getting the same mileage because the engine is spinning just as fast as it was previously. Espeically in cars with TWO overdrive gears (like our 6-Speeds ). Well this is wrong... WIND DRAG! Ballpark figures... going 70MPH instead of 65MPH is a 10% loss... drive 80MPH instead of 65, you lose 20%!! 'Try' and keep it slow

with factory tires pumped to 34 psi, VSA off and cruising at 75 I have recorded 31 mpg, on both sides of a trip across Pennsylvania (not exactly flat). I got well over 400 miles on a tank doing this. Since I changed to Dunlops mileage is not as good. But I do notice a big difference when I hold the speed down on my daily commute from 80 to between 65-70

'03 6spd, 70% highway / 30% city, usually maintain 70-75.

Average mileage is around 27.5 mpg, worst was about 24. I'm pleasantly surprised. The best I got in my Integra was 32 - 33 mpg.

Anybody getting just 300 miles to a tank is either filling up too soon (tank holds 17 gallons) or has their foot stuffed in it WAY too much.
