What tire size fits the stock wheel and well?

Some of you guys have advanced experience on the subject. So, what size tire can I put on the stock CL-S rim, without it rubbing on anything? Springs are stock as well, for now.

Rock Dog,

Do a search and you should get your answer. But to save you the trouble...a 235/45/17 will fit nicely on your rim.

My friend got 235/45x17 to replace his stock tires. He also kept the factory wheels for his CLS He tells me that there are no problems at all, they are perfect!

That would be me. I am running 235/45ZR17-97W* Toyo T1S Proxies on the stock 17x7" rims. They do not rub. The car is not lowered. However, I have had 4 people in the car with a bunch of stuff in the floor and truck.

Check out the following link:

http://www.venommotorsports.com/howt...ldiameters.htm

It will allow you to compare the 215/50 x 17 stock tires and wheels to any combination of tires and wheels. It is a good tool to get an idea of what changes -- take a look.

Finally, all tires are made differently. Some ultra high performance all season tires are very wide (wider than my Toyos) so check with a dealer that will work with you.

Note: Different tires -- in a given size -- will have different widths and heights.

FDao,

I have done a search. I didn't feel like wading through thousands of posts about inane crap. This way I get direct results. Maybe I should do a search on Blah, Blah, Blah. That should kick up over 9,000 posts easy.

What about the replacement tire? I'm sure there are plenty of good ultra performance tires, but the 3 I am looking at are the Toyo T1S Proxies, Dunlop SP9000 and the Potenza RE730. Any thoughts? I want performance and the best wet and dry handling money can by.

Maybe I should start a topic to discuss tire performance!

I would love to know too! And I own the Toyo 235/45ZR17-97W* T1S Proxies.

Mine handle great in dry (all surfaces).

I originally wanted the RE-730s and S02, then got a tip about the T1S. I like tires that behave well in the WET and DRY.

I have gotten my wish, I'm very happy. I had 500 miles to return the tires. I would have, if I didn't think the difference -- over stock -- was night and day.

The tires you mentioned: RE-730, SP9000, and Toyo T1S were all mentioned to me by my buddy who races a Mazda RX7. He still had some RE-71 proxies (these things are so sticky that you should put tape inside the wheel well to protect from the sand the tires pick up). He knows tires and uses a ton of them, and I then did about 2 months of research.

Until someone lets someone have all 3 sets to test at the track, I don't know what is best between the 3.

I went with the Toyos since they were a very new design, they exceeded all of the load and speed ratings of the OEM tire.

Both the 225/45-17 and 235/45-17 TIS Proxies are good for 50 (or 51 psi) and have a load rated superiority to the OEM XL rated tire and are ZR (W) rated -- they are good for 168 miles/hour. The 235s have a 97 load rating, so the tires don't look as saggy as the stock tires.

I am running 39 lbs of pressure in the front and rear, and the tires will stand 50/51 lbs max. You can put more people in the car and be safer (from a load rating perspective).

Finally, one tire may be a bit better in the dry; the other a bit better in the rain; and another may be better on the freeway in heavy flooding. I've tried all the Toyos in all 3 conditions and am very happy.

Good luck, all 3 tires are good tires.

Thanks for the info Eric.

Do you have pictures of your tires? I'm a bit hesitant to put 235's on the car but a picture would help. I know 235 seems to mean different widths depending on the manufacturer.

I could not find Toyos on tiretrack.com. I don't think they sell them. Did you buy them on the internet? What did you do with the stock tires? I have 18k miles on my tires but they still have decent tread. If I could sell them I would do that but I don't want to throw them away.

Sorry, I do not have pictures. One of the other members just got some, so maybe he is more digital ready then I am. (heck, I don't even have still shots). I will remedy this at some point -- perhaps at next So Cal meet.

TireRack doesn't carry the Toyos. I got mine at a tire dealer in LA.

Here is the site for Toyo:

www.toyo.com

There is a link on the page to look up dealers by zip code. The price is all over the place, so shop around. I paid about $150 each (without install/tax/balance) for the 235/45ZR17-97W* T1S Proxies.

BTW -- there is a BMW 328i that has some really wide 16" wheels with 225 Pirelli P7000 SS tires and they look wider than my 235s, so some tires look wider than others. (Of course he does have at least 8" wheels...)
