What are those brackets in the glove compartment?

If you look in the glove compartment, on the sides are two black plastic brackets. What are they there for? I can't seem to make sense out of them being there. Are they for some shelf-thing? Anyone...Anyone?

The width is large for the owner's manual. They give you this little black case to hold the manual, valet key and stuff. But the bracket's are on both sides, and are way too wide for that. Hmmm......

Those little brackets are actually the stops for the glovebox. They pop out, behind the glovebox is where the interior airfilters go.Jens

Jens! You are the man with the answers!

Question: Living in L.A., I'd be interested in changing out the interior airfilter sooner and more often than called for in the service manual. Is this a do-it-yourself-kind-of-thing. What would your dealership charge to do this alone (parts + labor)?
