so i'm driving home 280N last night up to ssf and this lowered last generation rex passes me. i notice it has one of those huge fart pipes but i dont really pay attention. i'm pacing him at about 80 and the traffic opens up a bit, so he guns it. i dont bother cuz i figure 1) there's too much traffic to really race and 2) it's an rx-7 thats obviously modded...cl-s are fast, but not that fast. so anywayz...he guns it, and freakin FLAMES come outta the exhaust!!! what the hell was that? just backfire or what? last time i saw anything like that i was tailing an old school ferrari mondial (sp?) can anyone enlighten me on this? looked pretty cool since he had the car to back up a fart pipe w/ flames...

is it just a turbo thing? i see it sometimes on those 24hr lemans cars...

My friend in San Diego has a 2nd gen RX Turbo with tons of mods. Was making something like 300hp @ rear wheels AND the car is lighter than our CL Type-S.

The guy may have had the cat. removed, etc.

I do know that my friend keeps a couple of spare engines to fix up when one of them goes down...

 

It's the unburned (or excess) fuel igniting in the exhaust system.

The flame out of the "Fart" pipe that you see can also be accomplished on Honda 4 cylinder engine as well. It has to do with the amount of air/fuel being dumped into the engine, and eventually through the exhaust system. The car has to be quite heavily modded, althougg, with turbo cars, it's easier to get that effect.

my bike does it, I can rev it up over 12 grand and an 8" blue flame comes out the exhuast, it looks so cool at night!

I want my porsche to do it next!
