what is the general opinion of the CLK 430

I test drove one today and I have never been looked at as much in any car Ive ever driven. The car feels quick and sturdy with every luxury feature you can imagine. Even the Bose stereo sounded very crisp and bass thumping. It is a 2001 with 23K in pristine condition asking $40k ++

does anybody have any race stories or horror stories about the car. the dealer did tell me that the top on the car is worth like $10K dont know how true that is.

Are you referring to the convertible top? If so, I think the top on the M3 convertible is around the same price.

Lou: My friend's father has a CLK430. It's a very nice car. Looks great and is very solid, but I wouldn't spend that much to get a used car. Your CLS is faster - I pulled slightly on my friend's car with my CLS (I/H), so your 6-speed is probably faster.

Your CL is hot. I'd keep it for a while

My father in law has one, cramped rear seats, NO trunk at all, barely get golf clubs in. I feel cramped inside, not as wide as our CL's. Pricey maintenance ! Nice engine, the CLK430 that is !!

yea I know but i always loved the cLK 430 body style since it came out and it has aged very gracefully. I love the V8 sound and the car is solid piece of metal..I know my car is faster and probably more reliable but once you drive a benz...Where do you go from there except another Benz.

the difference in insurance is $10 a month and the car will be garaged exactly like my CL-S. My cl is $30 K new and this car is $40K which I have spent more than $10K on mods on my cl-s.

Before you get that car for that price, i would go to ebay and look for same car. I would consider the M3 first, I have seen some on ebay used with less mileage for less than 40K.

that was my original pick put paying an additional $2K of insurance a year is a little too much...that would make it close to $4500 a year for full coverage

Is that insurance coverage due to age, driving record or is it just because its the BWM M3.

I tend to think they are a bit of a girls car however they are quite nice.

IMO you've got a great car right now, wait a bit and enjoy it. After that go after the Benz's.

thats my problem if I do stay with this car that means

1- headers
2- supercharger
3- exhaust
4- b-pipe
5- xm tuner with antenna
5- alpine audio processor
6- neuspeed short shifter

by the time Im done with the car my cost would be close to $50K and you and I both know the cl-s is not worth $50K....if I get into a Benz yes its pricey but I would be spending the money anyways but at least Ill be getting some of it back.

a new clk 430 convertible cost around $65K brand new in 1999 for the 2000 model...that car with low miles is going for mid $40K at the dealers going into 2004

CLK430 is my fave "lower-middle level" Benz. fucking BEAUTIFUL CAR, id go for it in a heartbeat if i could afford it. that car really has aged well, you hit the nail on the head, the newer CLK is cool too but the older generation still looks sooooo damn good and current. id go for it.

CLK = 40 something mid life crisis

If you want to spend that much on a coupe get a G35!

Besides, the previous gen CLK rear styling is boooring.

Now the AMG SL55 or whatever it is, whoah!

Honestly, I'd skip the convertible altogether. If you do stereo mods, etc., you have to worry about someone gutting your stuff. Make a comp claim or two and your insurance is screwed. Secondly, the cost issue of replacing a motor or mechanical part on a Mercedes will be astronomical on top of the already expensive maintenance schedule they have. My grandmother had the older 4seater 'vert (can't recall the model) and the top got the electrical bugs that Mercedes can be famous for and cost a fortune to keep repaired.
I'd buy the coupe and simply call it a day!!!

thanks guys for your input I wanted the coupe but the salesman let me drive the vert. for half an hour and I must admit I got addicted. the coupe by far is a more of a practical car its just that it loses the look by a lot.

well see what happens Im still looking so nothing is a done deal

besides, you'll probably want to mod the CLK anyway and you won't be able to recoup that either! Modding is addicting and no matter what car you get you will look to make it better!

Even if you dump another 10K into your car you would not hit the 50k mark.

I added up how much my car cost and all my mods and it totalled more than $41K and that does not include any of the labor charges that I have accumulated along the way

throw in the S/C $4K
headers $1K
lightweight clutch and flywheel $1K
exhaust $500
b-pipe $400
upgrade my rear brakes $300
not to mention the little audio upgrades I want to do...all in all yes I do see myself breaking the $50 K quite easily. granted Ill have a sick ass ride but it is still a cl-S 6 speed. You cant tell me if somebody asked if you want my hooked up ack cl or a Porsche you would pick my cl

wrong, it was a little over 50 k new, 40k for this car is mucho dinero, not worth it, even tho i think the car is sweet

on the plus side, it will keep most of its value for the next few years, as the new body is fugly

tough call
