What exactly is vtec and what does it do? Stupid question...I know

I understand that Vtec kicks in around 5000rpm on our cars. What exactly does it do to produce more power(puts on flamesuite)? I can definately feel and hear a difference when it hits vtec...almost is like a supercharger.

What is vtec?
What does it do?

I tried doing a little research on my own, but quickly got confused b/c there seems to be a bunch of different types of "vtec" engines...DOHC, SOHC, i Vtec, iVtec I, etc

basically u get higher end power, most cars start off fast but will lose high speed power,so vtec gives you that extra speed at the end..or the beggining if you floor it or something

how does it do that? Is it some sort of force induction?

has to do with cams i believe; essentially they all work as apposed to working individually...hence the louder "roar"
sorry...i'm not quite too sure how to explain it either...just think "unison" haha...

the values open longer when you hit vtec. produce more power.

i dont think it has anything to do with forced induction, but the engine components themselves, like eric and 07 TL stated

Variable timing and lift electronic control ... toyota (vvti), nissan, etc. all have there version of it. purpose: for greater fuel efficiency at lower rpm's at the sacrafice of power. Vtec = greater Lift and duration of intake and exhaust valves and that = more power.... to keep it short and simple.

I'll take a stab...

The cams have a bigger lobe (sp} for VTEC and some sort of hydraulic valve engages to run on the more aggressive lobe opening the intake/exhaust valves higher/longer to create more air entering and exiting the engine.

you can hear vtec louder in DOHC engines, smaller engines crack vtec the loudest, IE B16s, B18 and my homeboys H22 cracked pretty loud too.

100% correct...

Older TLs and Legends have VIS (Variable Induction System)
Additional butterly valve opens at around 4500 rpm's to increase airflow.

Let me throw in my

In the "cam" world you basically have two types. You have one thats made for Low to Mid RPM power, and one thats made for Mid to High RPM power.

Vetec kinda incorporates the best of both worlds. Two cams in one!

In older cars like mucsle cars, you had to decide low end grunt, or high top end power. If you had one you did not usually have the other. There was always a trade off. A Sacrifice if you will. V tec just adresses that problem.

I know ther is more than that, but for simplicity this is what I'm trying to convey to him.

Hope that kinda helps ya a little bit too.
