What does Turning VSA off do?

Most of you guys mention turning off the VSA when street racing or on the track. I am not really sure what benefit is there, isnt wheel spin bad? I thought VSA should prevent some of the wheel spin, however in practice it did not happen. I turned VSA off and was able to get better grip. Clarification needed here on benefits of turning VSA off to get better traction.

Yes, wheel spin is bad if there's too much. Turning the VSA off allows the car to release and not bog down once the tires begin spinning. If the VSA is left on, the car WILL bog on launch, this is worse than tire spin. For drag racing, you should seek better traction through better tires, not VSA.

VSA is a combination of traction and yaw control. The reason you want to turn it off when racing is that a certain amount of wheelspin is important for a good launch. Our VSA will kick in if, not turned off, by bogging the car...definitely not a good thing when drag racing...Does that answer your question?

On a stick it's when you let the clutch out too fast without enough gas. On our car, it's when the car senses too much spin and cuts the fuel....creating a sudden drop in power...like when you go down on a rollercoaster....that's the same feeling.

You got it! You must turn the AC off too! I also turn off the radio, roll up the windows, and close the sunroof.

It makes it a h--l of a lot more fun to play on mountain roads when VSA is not trying to second guess your every move!!!

About turning A/C off; I thought that under full throttle the ECU shut the compressor down. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yeah the A/C cuts off at full throttle, but some guys just don't trust that it does. Whats the deal with the radio? Must help your concentration, ha ha. Don't concentrate to much, it will cause severe forehead wrinkles that will cause aerodynamic drag and slow you down. But if you do, wear yo grandma's old bathing cap to plaster the wrinkles down, plus it looks phat.

Seriously though - VSA monitors more shit than you can and at least 1 million times faster too. It has saved many lives on this board alone. It is much more than a bogging device to slow down your stoplight drags. ONLY turn VSA off on straight line romp, not for street racing or twisties.
Most all the other stuff I agree on.
Don't get cocky with your skills man, it's possible life and death shit at stake.
Just my honest opinion, cuz I'm a fun drivin fat f#@k that drives like hell.
Just be responsible.

fun drivin

LOL....I think someone mentioned that they turned off the radio, lights, etc. to remove any unneccessary strain from the alternator.

Yeh, that's why I do it. It may not make a difference on these newer cars, but it sure did on my older ones.

CLoSetoRAD; don't know about your VSA, but the dealer AND the factory service guy have both checked out the operation of my VSA and the verdict is that it functions correctly. That being said, the Acura rep. also said VSA was programed to protect people from themselves! When hard driving in the mountains at 8/10ths the damn thing keeps trying to out think me!!! Granted in an emerengcy, during Normal Driving, I will be glad to have it, but the fast way through the twisties is to SHUT IT OFF! Maybe if getting a drivers license was actually a test of how well one could drive instead of $12.00 and sign your name, this would not be needed.
I vented and feel better now.

P.S. A driving school course, for your kids, is the best way to protect them when they drive.

Dan,
I agree with you and your advisors 100% and the way you put it was right on the money.
To quote the famous Race Car driver- Actor Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man " Excellent driver, yea, excellent driver"
You have to remember not everyone is as great a driver as you are. There may be some kids here that thinks they're indestructible and try to take on the twisties at 9/10th's with VSA off and kill themselves and possibly some "weird" person driving a 87 Camry coming the other way.
The fact that VSA is a waste of time the way you drive is your choice. That's what the button is for. But ACURA ain't takin responsibility for it.
You had everyone in the service dept. tell you what its for and they told you it was working perfect.
If that is so, then I think you missed the point. When the guy said "It saves people from themselves!" he most probably was trying in a nice way, (please take no offense) of saying drivers like you. That will blatantly think "geez this stupid thing has cut in and out on me a dozen times in the past two miles, IT MUST BE DEFECTIVE - NOT ME. The car was telling you IT WAS AT IT'S LIMIT while you may in fact had a LOT MORE JUICE LEFT.
Geez, don't take it as a personal attack.
The World and it's people have a lot to teach you if you will listen.
I always listen Twice as much as much as I talk (That's f#$king scary)
We cool now? Sorry didn't mean to piss any body off!
