Vtec effect questoin

I have a friend, who drives a moded Saab 9-3 turbo. Anyways, he thought i was abusing the car by going high RPMs all the time. I tried to expalin to him that when vtec want to kick in, there isn't really much i can do about.. Hehe

But he made me wonder if i really was killing my engine. So i asked him to drive it, and point out roughly how to achieve that vtec kick. He was quite impressed with the kick in. He also told me he rided in his friend's mod 4 cyl accord, and the effect is nothing like the V6.

He was also impressed and confused how when vtec kicks in,
the rpm goes up so fast. I don't want to sound like its my first day driving my 3.0 CL. But i wonder if pulling high RPM frequently would shorten engine life. Note, i don't have any mod, and i dont do anything drastic, like neutral drop or stuff like that.

the only thing i do sometimes is d1-d3 or just pulling a bit hard on vtec kick ins,, rarely do i really punch it.

Anyawys, any thoughts on wear out vs. rpm of engine ?

Keep the oil clean, and go to synthetic for the best protection. Wait fifteen minutes before reving the engine alot to let it warm up completely, and don't bump it off the rev limiter too much. Our engines are strong and the weakest link breaks first, probably the tranny or CV's or diff. I've been on the TL and CL boards for three years and have yet to hear of one single engine failure due to an enginnering mechanical fault or weakness.

My CL is my second VTEC car, and I've never had any problems due to using the VTEC range. In fact, the car seems to like it WAY too much. First of all, I believe you're supposed to be up into VTEC range now and again....Otherwise, why bother? As such, it's my understanding that the engine is designed and built for being in that RPM range.

But, two things. First, I wouldn't spend a lot of time steady in the high RPM range. And by "high" I mean near redline. It just doesn't sound good to me. Second, your gas mileage is going to plummet in those ranges.

The VTEC range is there mostly for consistent power and boost during accelleration. I don't think it was intended for cruising.

My $0.02 worth.
