Interesting. I guess perhaps this was what I had. I was leaking drops of oil before my tranny went out.

Product Update: Timing Belt Auto-Tensioner
Safety Recall: V6 Engine Water Pump Recall

Background

Product Update: The timing belt tensioner is filled with
oil to dampen oscillation. Due to a manufacturing
problem, the tensioner oil can leak. If enough oil is lost,
the timing belt loosens and causes engine noise.
Safety Recall: All vehicles not yet repaired under
service bulletin 02-022, Safety Recall: V6 Engine Water
Pump, are also eligible for this product update. They
are identified on a separate campaign responsibility
report. Effective immediately, discontinue the use of
service bulletin 02-022, and use the repair and
warranty information in this service bulletin instead.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

Timing Belt Auto-Tensioner Product Update:

2002 3.2TL: From VIN 19UUA5...2A051141 thru end of production

2003 3.2TL: From VIN 19UUA5...3A000001 thru 19UUA5...3A043888

2002 3.2CL: From VIN 19UYA4...2A003900 thru end of production

2003 3.2CL: From VIN 19UYA4...3A000001 thru
19UYA4...3A009883

2002 MDX: From VIN 2HNYD1...2H505108 thru
2HNYD1...2H545156

Some vehicles affected by this product update are still in dealer inventory. These vehicles must be repaired before they are sold or leased.

Water Pump Safety Recall:

2003 3.2TL: From VIN 19UUA5...3A030788 thru
19UUA5...3A035155

2003 3.2CL: From VIN 19UYA4...3A007392 thru
19UYA4...3A008174

2002 MDX: VIN 2HNYD1...2H534751
From VIN 2HNYD1...2H535893 thru
2HNYD1...2H538954
VIN 2HNYD1...2H539162
VIN 2HNYD1...2H539327

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a
notification of this product update. Customers will
receive one of two notifications, based on whether the
vehicle was already repaired according to service
bulletin 02-022. Examples of the customer notifications
are at the end of this service bulletin.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

One of two corrective actions is appropriate, based on
whether the vehicle is affected by the water pump recall
and, if so, if the recall has been done.

1. If the vehicle is affected by the recall and the repair
has not been done, inspect the casting die number
on the water pump housing. If the casting die
number is “9,” replace the water pump, the timing
belt, and the timing belt auto-tensioner.

2. If the vehicle is not affected by the recall or it was
already repaired, replace the timing belt autotensioner.

hey where did you get his from? pianoman?
i am planning to take a copy of it to the dealer with me.

Alldata.com does not list this recall.

However, under '03 TL, it lists this following General Recall --

03-017 MAY 03 Campaign - PCM/Fuel Pressure Regulator Replacement

That's something new. I haven't heard about this one yet. Issued in May, 2003. Hmm...

Looks like I need the tensioner update (as does probably all 03 owners).

The water pump deal only affects 782 vins. Thats a very small range, but I guess I'll have to check the water pump casting number to be sure.

In for service again

BTW the belt tensioner on my FORD Tbird was the only thing I had to have replaced in the first 100,000 miles

The Acura will be going in again. 1st for a parking brake problem, 2nd for a replacement lower control arm and now this.

Ford has been very aggressive about improving the cars' durability. They instituted a program where the vendors were responsible for the cost of failures, and -- wouldn't you know -- the components were suddenly very durable.

Maybe if Acura had implemented the same type of policy the auto guys wouldn't have problems w/ their trannies. It seems that the Acura parts are ok, but the outside vendor parts suck.

For you fellow Massholes...

Just called Acura of Peabody to set up an appointment, they didn't even know about it! Probably because it was only released on Friday, but still... they know about it now!

Anyways, set up the appointment, I hope they give me a phat loaner! Also gonna get that rattly sunroof fixed!

Are there any other important TSBs out there I should look out for? I don't think I have warped rotors, b/c the steering wheel doesn't shake when I brake...

My online “Owners Link” says nothing about the Timing Belt issue, but the VIN range given in the original post says that my car IS affected.

I just faxed my dealer the TSB that Pianoman listed... They shall call me back...

The dealer told me 9 times out of 10 that the customer is notified before the dealer ever is....

This sucks.

for my loaner tsx they are cool but they dont downshift to maximize power 1st goes till 40mph and 2 till 80 or 90mph but when you are going 60 and punch or use the autostick to go to second it wont, it wont go to second unless your under 50mph, but the brakes are AWSOME, but the car has a lot of body roll.

my car is on the list, when I take my car in this week to have the leather replaced on the front seats they're goign to run a check. The guy said they need to check and look for a number 9 on the water pump or something. If it was there then they'd replace the water pump and the tensioner for me. My number is included in the list of cars.

Gents...
I know it's on the other side of the engine but do you think this would be a good time to replace the flywheel? I have wanted the Comptech unit since it was released... I guess now I have an excuse to take it in...

I have a question about this timing belt tensioner pulley problem:

Is this an actual recall in that they will replace it even if we aren't having a problem with it yet? Or is it the opposite, and you have to be experiencing the problem to get the work done?

I thought ALL recalls were done, even if you are not having problems. The recall is to prevent you from having problems in
future!!

Right. But is this an actual recall? The text from page 1 here says "safety recall" on the water pump issue but "product update" on the timing belt tensioner.

If it's just a product update, would they do the repair even if the problem hasn't manifested itself?

Anyone??

Can somebody help me out here with the distinction between the "recall" and "product update" wording and how it pertains to getting the necessary repairs done?

Spoke to my dealer and made an appt. the other day to have the tensioner checked. They told me that "recall" has to do with safety issues (in terms of possible harm to the driver and passengers). For example, a safety belt retractor or SRS problem would be "recalled." Remember the Firestone tires on Ford Explorers that spontaneously blew up? That's also considered a recall.

A "product update" means Honda/Acura has discovered that a certain part of the car (unrelated to safety) may not be operating within factory specs. The "product" in question will be replaced with a version that's been "updated."

I was about to do my timing belt and ran across this tensioner recall while looking for some info. The recall doesn't show up for my VIN on MyAcura, but according to an old thread, my car should be included. I don't recall seeing this recall being done by the previous owner (I bought the car 2 years ago), but technically, if the previous owner didn't have this done, any Acura dealership should still replace my tensioner and related parts?

EDIT.... I didn't mean to post my question on this original recall thread, but I guess it'll bump up an old thread for owners that bought their cars used
