Valve ticking question

I have a feeling my valves need adjustment. They make a loud ticking but ti's only in park and neutral, and when you rev up you hear it speed up w/ the revs (it just started getting louder about 3 months ago). Would this make sense since maybe there isn't a load on them. At first I thought it was my tranny, but I went to the guy that has built some of our trannies and he says it's not. So now i'm just assuming it's the valves. I can't get a precise location w/o a stethescope though

btw, I have a 3.0

How many miles are on it....I don't see why a Honda motor would need any adjustments of the valves. Are you sure its not an exhaust leak....that could very well sound like valve ticking.

See...we can get along. A nice clean post

90,000 There have been many members who have needed adjustments.

99.9% sure it's not an exhaust leak. But it may be a possibility as i've always had resonance, however this just popped up a little while ago. But It definately sounds like it's comming from the motor.

i'm convinced it's the valves, i'll know when I can get to a stethoscope today. I was just curious to why it only made it in neutral or park. Is it because their isn't a load on it?

Thats why I would think its an exhaust leak....its louder at Idle...then goes away, but valves could do that too. Do they do anything to the valvetrain when you do a 100K service...I know they usually do the timing belt/chain. I was told that on the 2nd gens....the valves are just noisy

just adjust if need be. And to do the timing belt, but personally I'd do that at 90K. I'm about to do that now.

I know on all the 30, 60, 90, etc it says to check the valves and adjust if noisy.

1 32/nd of a turn of the wrench can mess up the valve train....probably just needs to be adjusted.

At 90K valve adjustment is a good idea, even if they are not noisey. They have solid lifters and should be adjusted, who know you may gain some HP.

My '95 Integra used to need adjustment every 30k or so. It ran a lot stronger and smoother afterward.

Scotty, just get a long flathead screwdriver and put the flat end on the valve cover in the position of the cylinders and put the handle to your ear. You will definitely be able to determine whether or not it's is out of specification valve lash.

Hondas are pretty notorious for needing valve adjustments...I'm assuming this would be true for the V6 motors as well.
