V1 update?
Just trying to stir things up. I notice the upgrade section of the V1 site is down because of a "shortage of parts". Does this mean that there IS a newer thinner model out? Inquiring minds want to know. :p

There is a thinner model - it's, I believe, .3" thinner. The newest SW is 3.619. To determine your SW version, turn the V1 off, then hold the mute button and turn it on, still holding the mute button for about 5 seconds. Then release the mute button, and depress it a single time. The digits will be displayed one at a time.
The only reason it's smaller, BTW, is that they moved either the rear laser detector or the light sensor next to the bogey counter.
A good friend of mine (the maxima convert) has one from 7 months ago, and ours work the same except for a few minor differences in our SW.

I think the only thing they changed physically is that they moved the rear laser sensor from below the rear RADAR sensor to along side the bogey counter.

Right church, wrong pew. See below:
The new V1 has the light sensor in the housing somewhere else.

I may get heat from the V1 fans...
I was seriously considering a V1, but before plunking down $400, I did some research and the escort 8500 tested much higher than the V1. It is also 100 bucks less. unless Valentine comes out with something new, they may not be the top dog for longer

Before you challenge my post.
Someone posted a few months ago that they did a check and the owner of the “radartest” and Escort website were in the same city and on the same server.
They may have “fixed” this by now, but that was the case a month or two ago.
Coincidence ???

And, the test used an older version of the V1.
The current V1 is much lighter than the escort 8500, and I think the V1 is overall smaller. The 8500 is very long.
Both companies offer trial periods, get both and try them, which is what I did.
The differences in build quality and attention to detail makes the V1 the better buy.
The windshield mount on the 8500 is crap. The 8500 constantly vibrated against the windshield, the V1 has a much larger mount and has a rubber strip where it meets the windsheild, no vibrating.
The 8500 costs another $30 for the hardwire kit, and another $10 for a visor mount, both which are included in the V1.
The remote display on the 8500 is useless, all it has is a single red led.
Then there are the V1 direction arrows:
- cost of V1 = $400
- cost of remote disply = $40
- look on guys face as he was pulled over and ticketed for thinking he passed the radar source when it was still up ahead = PriceLess
If you really want to save money, then go with the escort 7500

They work almost EXACTLY the same. This whole "The V1 found Ka at 3.5 miles and the 8500 found it at 2.3 miles" is just STUPID!!!
The only difference is the V1 has a rear radar detection system and a bogey counter. They detect radar nearly the same. Don't be fooled by all this bullshit marketing and "independent tests" out there...
PS - I kept the V1 and returned the 8500 because I became very dependent on the ARROW indicator of the V1 as well as the radar count #... I just felt "naked" only getting a beep and signal strength from the 8500...

I still disagree with the post above by autoxCLS in reference to the rear LASER sensor.
I’m almost sure the small circle below the RADAR antennae is the LASER sensor on my unit.
I will have to check the manual tomorrow and see if there is a diagram in there.

I looked in the manual, and page 13 shows the "Rear Laser Sensor" located between the "Bogey Counter" and the "Band Identification."
I'm also quite sure I have the new unit -- it is the newer slim boy with new manual!

We are talking about 2 different things -- you are looking at the old manual -- yes?
I'm talking about the Rear Laser Sensor being located in the new unit exactly where your "PHOTO CELL" is indicated...
That's what I'm talking about...

I was correcting the post from autoxCLS waaaay up above.
His diagram of MY picture calls out the rear LASER sensor as a “Light Sensor”, that is wrong.
Lets get back to the topic……..V1 RULZ !!!!!!!!!!

Aah! So they moved the rear laser sensor to underneath the bogey counter (Mike Valentine makes a joke about the rear laser sensor - it's useless). I guess they moved the light sensor in the same location, because my manual says that the rear laser sensor is below the bogey counter. (I have the thinner V1)

Check page 13 (in the new manual -- not to be confused with Shawn's picture). There is same "basic" picture that Shawn has, but the REAR LASER DETECTOR is shown BETWEEN the BOGEY COUNTER and BAND IDENTIFIER (where his PHOTO CELL is shown)...
If you know something different, I'd love to know, so I can correct the manual's picture...

Eric,
I'm agreeing with you on this one... I was just surprised to find that I was wrong!
On mine, (the thinner, lighter one) the rear laser is below the bogey counter. Has to be! There's nowhere else for it!
