v1 to the rescue again

Alright all, this is for all you prospective v1 purchasers out thre.... I was coming back from meeting my GF in VA. I was headed on US-17 and following an elantra. Well, both of us were going around 85 on this road which was a 55 zone. Well, I was following about 3 cars back and the v1 goes off strong on K band.... and then off hmmm - brain starts thinking and it seems like the signs of instant on. I quickly shifted from 5 to 3 and slowed to 60 just intime to see a statie perpindicular to the road hiding in the woods. Well, I see him pull out in my rear view, speed past me, lights go on, elantra pulls over....

THANKS FOR EVERYTHING v1

Virginia you say? Since radar detectors are illegal there you must have yours hidden well. How is your mounted?

yep, definetley illegal ... I have the detector mounted to the right of the rear view and the concealed display mounted under the radio. The reason for the concealed display is that to get a ticket for it, the cop must think that the detector is on. For them to think this, they can see the "lights" on the detector or use vg2. Well, v1 should be invisible from vg2.

From what I understand the V1 is cased in Magnesium making it undetectable. This is funny that this post came up since I just posted in the Rambling section for reviews of V1's. I guess I'll get one.

as far as vg2 goes, the reason why i picked up the v1 instead of any of the other detectors is that one of the engineers of valentine developed vg2 for the cops. He still works at valentine.... hmmm

actually in VA if you have ANY power source for a radar in the reach of ANY passenger in the car then it is considered illegal.

So when you are in VA only thing that will work is if
a. your detector runs on batteries and you have no battery in the car.
b. your unit is using a 12volt adapater and the power for it is in the trunk.

other wise most cops in va will simply ask for your detector, place it behind your driverside rear wheel, ask you to back it up or get fined.

fine for a radar in va?
75 dollars non moving violtion plus 30 court fee = 105
speeding over 10mph?
30 dollar plus 3 dollar per every mile over limit + 30 court fee = 90 MINIMUM and moving violation and points

BTW, I've been using a Escort 8500 for over a year and a half EVERYDAY in VA. Had mine mounted on the corner driver side visor then moved it to behind the dark tinted part on top of the windshield. and also hard wired w/ smart cord and mute button/display under the ashtray.

Also TypeSKid who had a V1 got caught by in VA even tho it is suppose to be VG2 immune

I was vacationing in VA and got caught with an unplugged rader detector by a bicycle cop. How embarassing. Anyway, he told me he could keep it or break it, but I told him I wasn't using it, and I didn't know the law (bad excuse, I know), but he gave me a ticket (for $105 dammit) and let me keep the radar detector. So it wasn't so bad.

Also, heres a question for the MODS, can I get something put under my name instead of CL- Member? If not then how can I?

Thanks,

Pete

Click "user cp" at the top of your page. Then click "Edit Profile". Scroll down until you see "Custom User Test". Type in what you want; then scroll to the bottom and click "Submit Modifications".

Hmmm , this is some scary stuff. As far as the power source deal, I have my v1 on a switch so I could always fight that it is NOT connected to a power source just based on the fact that there is a switch in the way .... maybe.

But damn, I cant believe that TypeSKit got caught by vg2. I was near my friend and a cop at a light. I was in the middle. Cop walks out of car and writes my friend a ticket for his radar detector being on ..... the v1 was on all the time. So I dunno ...

Sounds like you got really lucky...

If you hadn't been following anyone, and you got hit with the radar, you would have been toast. I love my V1, and trust it to a point... But I certainly don't speed 30mph over the limit alone.

Obviously, the V1 did do its job though. Just be thankful you weren't the first in the pack.

Re: Re: v1 to the rescue again

Good point which makes me want to note something else ....

THE v1 will not save you from any tickets BUT the v1 and some common sense will

Dont speed with the v1 when you are alone because the only thing that the v1 will serve as is letting you know when you have been smoked. You might as well change the alert on it to "cha ching" .... NEVER NEVER NEVER be the first in the pack.

Are you sure it was K band? I haven't been hit with K band in about as long as it has been for X band. Maybe it's because I live in Florida, but K band is archaic. It's Ka band or laser here in Florida. Could it be that since the V1 ONLY has a LED showing band you mis read it in the heat of the moment??? Get a 8500 and it'll tell you in bold letters what radar band is painting you!

I am pretty sure it was K band and yes I know its archaic.... so is the town I was in ... dont have cell service for 70 miles around it. I kinda wish v1 made it easier to identify the bands..... oh well

VG2 is a "radar detector - detector". In simple terms, a radar detector is a super heterdyne transceiver (to quote our British friends) and can be sniffed out while operating. Both the V1 and 8500 are basically immune to this now (according to manufacturers & latest tests at least). As I may be moving to VA next month, this thread is very helpful. This URL below is a damned pricey remote display - but looks like it would really be effective at a true "stealth" install . There is also a guy on bimmer.org who has installed the detector itself in the 3rd brake light housing (yes - no LIDAR protection that way but he still claims great Ka band warning as beofre) and then used this for the display.

I've had my V1 for nearly two years now and coincidently the audible is similar to other radar detectors. But I don't need to visually see the ID. I can tell by the type of beep. Certainly you can tell the difference between the single-brap K or the quick double-click/click of the Ka. That's all my V1 sounds off with, K and Ka.

BTW, K is not so archaic, K is for Kansas and I'm sure it outnumbers Ka by 10 to 1 in this state. Why would the cops here upgrade to Ka if they rarely even use K?

Over the decades, I think there are 5 major reason for instant on:
(I know you said "lazy")

1.The training manual teaches this method and specifically points out that it is imperative to do this (instant on) in order to be an effective countermeasure to radar detectors. It use to be the turning the radar on and off for short periods of time in and of itself could defeat an ordinary radar detector which needed several seconds just to detect (i.e. you can switch it on and off way too fast for a radar detector to even alert/respond). Obviously this has changed with the new detectors and new technology. So cops follow the manual because in part if they don't, you can go to court and say "the manual says proper operation of the radar is X, and the cop is not following X in order to minimize inaccuracy, etc."

2.The law requires that the officer first observes the speeder visually and follow-up with an radar reading to verify his visual observations. This is much more difficult when the numbers are flying across the radar from multiple cars passing by. Pick a car, clock it, move on.

3.Remember the cancer scare from radar? In the instant-on mode, you're probably getting about 5% of the original time from always on. Anything to save a cops life.

4.Most radars use to have an audio alert lock that would sound and alarm and lock in the speed of the offender. Cop would turn the radar on, set the dial to 66 (in a 55), close his eyes and wait, and when the tone alerted, just wake up, read the numbers, assign it to the car out front. Illegal today. Traffic duty is a lot of work now, you have to pull the trigger; cops have to be "accountable" today.

5.That cat and mouse game between radar detectors [manufacturers] and radar. If traffic radar was always on (no instant-on) V1 would retail for $49.95 because that's about all I would be willing to pay for a radar detector.
