V1 Remote Installation Improved!

Folks,

I took Shawn S's instructions and just installed the remote V1. However, I did one better , in my opinion. And NO I do not have pictures unless you send me your dig camera.

I mounted the remote not on the wheel where Shawn has but rather in the little depression between the two seat heater switches. It fits pretty well, is angled toward the driver a pinch, and limits the opening of the change tray by about 1/8 of an inch - I can still fit my fingers in there.

It was a bitch to thread the phone wire through this section but you can reach your hand around from the other side while stuffing the wire in - remember, go left of center behind the seat switches because there is a diagnostic plug in the middle of the back of this area. Took about 5 minutes just to get this wire through.

I'll take some regular pictures soon and then scan or digitize them. But you ought to be able to figure this out.

Questions?

I'm preparing for my install and I thought about your locate for the remote instead of Shawn's, too.

But, what about having to take your eyes off the road to view the display?

What about having to lean over to hit the mute (as I suspect you'll have to quite frequently).

Doesn't the remote move around in the slot or do you have it securely fastened? Sometimes with my agressive driving, I would hate for the wires to have to keep my remote from falling out and onto the floor.

TIA

Here's what I did. Take the remote piece and velcro it under the hazard light button. I ran the wire to the steering column wheel and then back into the dash (no it doesn't twist). From there, run it to the fuse box. It's incredibly simple and extremely clean, not to mention still in view and not blocking the instruments. Good luck.

"Not really a problem for me. Its about as hard as glancing at the rear view mirror."

What about having to lean over to hit the mute (as I suspect you'll have to quite frequently).

"I can easily reach this - its as easy to reach as the seat button or (almost) the shifter."

Doesn't the remote move around in the slot or do you have it securely fastened?

"I used the heavy duty velcro fastener which came with the kit. It attaches well. I tie-wrapped some of the cables to other harnesses under the dash and as long as I keep the dirty side down, I think they will stay put."

You know where I think the coolest place to mount the display would be---in the sunglass holder so you could just flip it up or down and have your display right there for you. It would probably be easier to wire there as well.

Glad it worked out for you.

I considered other locations as well, but I decided the best place for me was right by the speedo so I can look at the V1 display and check my speed with just one quick downward glance.

One good thing about putting the remote below the coin tray is that if you do get pulled over, your law enforcement service provider is less likely to say: "Hey, what's that thing?" as has happened to me.

I take it you bought the remote only to eliminate the display being visible from behind the car, which I'm sure it does.

The really good thing about the steering wheel mount though, is that it is as natural as checking your tach/speedo and only takes a fraction of a second.

I turn up my volume when I know I'm cruising through a heavily radared area. Otherwise, I have the volume off and depend on the visual alert alone to draw my attention to any strong and persistant bogeys.

If you are exclusively a highway user this wouldn't be worthwhile; but in the city I find the noise of false alerts is too annoying. If you suffer from a lot of falsies, I don't think you can get away with operating in "silent mode" without having the remote (or the detector itself) in front of your nose.

Dude.. After looking at your install I realized a nicer place... I have my seats leaned back.. I mean waayyyy back.. I can only see the speedometer, but not the temp gauge and stuff without having to lift myself up.. So what I did was to put it up directly above the speedometer.. I placed some double sided foam tape on top of the remote and stuck it underneath that curve that slants into your controls gauge.. So it is literally staring me at the face even when I'm not looking at the speedometer. I have the seat so low and far back that it is right below the view of the upper half of the steering weel and between the center of the wheel where the honk is.. The view of my speedometer is about 1/4inch below that.. So this way I'm looking at both simultaneously.. I noticed that the remote being on the column required me to take my eyes off the speedometer for a fraction of a second because literally below all the gauges.. Plus I tried simulating what it'll be like to reach over and press the mute button if it were in that position and my arm had to reach farther down. And if you have to make a sudden swerve, chances are your hand will be caught in the steering wheel *LOL*.. The wire runs along the groove nicely and i run it down the side door underneath the whole column chassis. So consider that if you think Shawn S's setup is cool.. Plus I have the unit right behind the rearview mirror on the passenger side. It's high enough so the rear antenna can look over the passenger seat. That grid won't allow the suction cups to stick, but its nicer cuz half of the unit is right behind the rearview and plp sitting in the car only have a partial view of it. If you have the remote you won't even need to have the unit in view.. The visors are completely out the way.. I will snap some pics to show you guys how much better that setup is.. Especially if you like driving with the seats low when you're crusin'..

I have a totally different mounting set up for both the main unit and the remote.

My V1 is installed in the upper left hand corner of the windshield. This proved to be more stealthy than by the rear view mirror. From either side it's nearly impossible to see, even when looking for it. From the rear it's less noticeable than when I had it installed by the RVM.

My remote is installed under the trap doors of the cupholder. It's velcro-ed to the flat just above the furthest ( or closet to the shift lever ) cup holder. I do lose access to 1 cup holder, though it still functions well as a cell phone holder.

When pulled over, the cop leaning in didn't notice the V1 sitting by his left ear, and with the trap doors closed, the remote was also hidden. When you park the closed trap doors also keep the remote from prying eyes/hands.

An additional benefit is that the mute button is located just about where your hand/fingers fall during normal driving. So muting is almost second nature.

As to the vision aspect of the remote, I've been driving with a V1 ( mine's new, the wife gets the older version )for 6 years, you know when you are getting a full lock on. When the signal goes full on, first you remove the foot from the accelerator and or apply brake/down shift, then you look at the direction finder to see where the radar might be. On smaller signals, it's really easy to look down to get a directional reading. Also, the arrows are fairly large and bright, you can almost see them out of the corner of your eye, without taking your eyes off the road.

For those of you about ready to install your V1 / remote. Go to Radio Shack and get a 10-12' length of phone cord. I moved my remote around for weeks, using double side tape to hold it place to demo the placement. The extra length of cord can be cable tied when you finnaly settle on the location of the remote.

Later

Sounds like a cool setup.. I especially like the unit at the side of the mirror, but what about the rear antennas.. I thought that making sure that it panned the largest surface area of your rear window is recommended. If it's on the side will not be angled off to only view 1/4 of your rear windows and your opposite 1/4 of your windshield respectively? I haven't check that out yet, but i ask cuz there is a curve on the windows that bends along with the contours of the car... It's like trying to place a city sticker on the side of the windows, when you look at it from the outside the sticker is slanted at an angle....
...Anywho, taking your eyes off the road for too long is still dangerous in my point of view.. A deer darting in front of you takes a split second to react almost. Plus I think the unit being in the same line of view as the Gauges is so important.. When I lay back on my seet my nose meet the top portion of the steering wheel.. I know, damn that sounds low.. But anywho, constant check of your gauge, rearview mirror, side mirrors every so often is the proper routine that you learn from driver's ed. even.. Looking down in on your seat, passenger seat, back seat, gear shift console is where you get in trouble.. That's why a radio remote has been installed in the wheel, to prevent plp from looking at the console for too long. I guess if you're quick it doesn't make a difference, but when you have to stretch your neck for too long potential for disaster gets bad..
...Now I'm wondering, if your unit is in the general area of the cup holder then you litterally have to place your head down to look at it right? In other words the remote is in your line of site only when you want to look at it... I guess having it close to your finger only makes it quicker for muting... When I had the P8500 smart cord I only looked briefly at its remote cuz it only had a band reading.. But with the V1 you have to be more involved cuz there are about 4 variables that you have to look at and make a decision on.. I might be slow, but it takes me a while to figure out what da hell is going on when I have 3 arrows lit up, 6 bogey counts, 2 bands lit up and alert pulsating.. These are sticky situations that require a bit more time to figure out where the threat is especially because these lits and arrows change so quickly.. But.... with my setup I always see the "L" on the interface while i'm driving. When it starts going crazy my head is still pointed foward while i'm trying to analyze it.. The only time I ever turn my head is to look at the passenger side mirror. My head never even goes down at all... I thought of your setup before I installed my unit, but that issues was the first thing that popped into my head.. "How long is it going to take me to analyze the readings on the remote while driving?" I simulated it and I felt that my head would be down for way too long.
...but if you want total fitting, there's a unit that allows to you have this operate wirelessly. Even the V1 unit for those that don't have the remote. The unit is only 3/8" sq inches. Don't know too much detail, but will definately post ya'll up on this.

How tall are you that you can lean back so far?

You don't do this during "spirited" driving do you because your reaction time and span of view is reduced by driving from the back seat (from what it sounds like)

I only push the seat really far back when I have someone else in the car and they....oh, never mind....

I think everyone is making a big deal about looking down at the consul where the remote is. It's not like were flying a F16 with heat seekers coming at us. Worst case is your over the limit and the unit goes on solid lock on, checking the arrows then is just going to tell you which side of the street to pull over to.

Like I said, the unit goes full tilt you should be scrubing speed, not looking for the direction of the cop. Once you decrease your velocity, then check out the display.

On the half and quarter warnings, you casually glance down at the display, probably takes less than a second, max. You look for the flashing arrow, this is the strongest alert.

And my unit is not left of the mirror, it's on the upper left hand corner of the windshield. The curvature of the windshield really dosen't seem to effect the aim of the unit. Also, the rear facing attenna is angled slightly to compensate.

Sorry for asking this, but I really am clueless. After my last ticket I've decidedto get a V1 because peeps on this board rant and rave so much about it. I am reading post on this thread about hiding it from police view or just hiding it in general. IS the V1 illegal or something?? I see people around with there radar detector dead center on the dash or windshield, so I'm thinking that it might be illegal in certain state like those of you that have to hide it, am my wrong on this one?

Plp do make a big deal about the V1 concealment on here, but I don't know why.. Unless you live in the few states that bann radar detector you don't need to worry about it.. If you get pulled over for any reason other then speeding a COP can't do a damn thing about it. He would more likely give you a ticket with no thought if you got busted for speeding saw the detector there. More importantly, Valentine only sais the only reason for the V1 remote is so other drivers don't try to monitor the road from your unit.. That is it.. Check there site for the very few states that prohibit the detector.

Virginia and Washington DC and Canada. That's it. You can use a radar detector in ANY other state 100% legal.

That's right... The link to the official FCC regulation for this is also on www.valentine1.com site. Don't let plp scare you into thinking it's illegal.. Especially don't let you cop give you a lecture about it to if you're outside those states...
....Shawn S, where you at man?? Still wondering how you can see your v1 remote without having to sit all the way up and look down at it. Also wondering if anyone has tried the location I suggested.. To address the low seating position.. When I prop up to the wheel the v1 remote is still in site.. As a matter of fact it never leaves my site for one second when my eyes are straight ahead on the road... It is in my line of site when I'm tilted back and curled up to the wheel when I wanna pump da gas.. Give me feedback if you've tried new location. Check my link on my sig. for pics of v1 remote.
