V1 and the Concealed Display

I've been thinking about buying the V1, but wasn't too sure about the concealed display. Seeing that radar detectors aren't illegal in Cali would it be neccessary to get the display? Another thing I wanted to know is; why are the V1's mostly mounted to the left and above the rear view mirror? Is this the best location it should be at to get a full range?
Thanks

The concealed display is nice though... You can mount it, for example on the steering column, and you'll be the only one to see what's going on. At night, no one will see the bright red lights of the V1. Only you...

If you're going to spend 400 bucks on the V1, might as well get the concealed display for another 40.

So If I have the concealed display the lights on the V1 won't light up? Only the concealed display will?

It's only against the law in Virginia to have a radar detector. However if a cop sees one they're more likely to give you a ticket because they feel if you have one, then you must speed a lot. It's kind of like a personal victory for them to catch a speeder with a detector because it's like we were cheating. Check the latest Motor Trend to verify this.

Is it just as effective to have it on the column? Will the sensors be affected by the blockage.

Mounting the display on the steering column makes it easier to see. I'd rather look down at all the instrument dials, etc. than have to look up at or near the rear view mirror.

Yes, the unit does not light up if the display is used.

Oh, I didn't know that. I wondered why someone would want the V1 lighting up and the concealed display at the same time. Duh!

The main unit must be mounted on the windshield for optimum performance. All the concealed display does is DISPLAY. It doesn't have anything to do with the detection, so mount it whereever you feel like.

So let me get this straight. You can mount the V1 itself to the top of the windshield but you can actually have the display behind the wheel? So the cops can't see it unless right next to you then.

Exactly...

And the only thing the cop is going to see is a black box, no lights, no anything... And that's really nice at night!!!

It basically looks as if the V1 is not turned on.

My V1 concealed display is strictly for show. I have it mounted where the fake coin tray is located. I actually took my apart and mounted the board only against a cutout, sorta like you would with a flat screen tv on the wall. It still works but I never use it. Like someone said, for $400 what's another $40. I wish I had pics.....
